vsync should be at the rate of your display.. 20fps is a little low for refresh rate.. the character select screen is usually less detailed and hence the fast frame rate.. Take oblivion as a example.. when I'm talking to a character on screen the framerate is about 60+ but when I get out of the chat dialog screen the framerate drops down 20 or 30fps as it's rendering the environment again.

if you turn vsync off you may end up with screen tearing.. and depending on the game.. looks really ugly as you may have two frames show at the same time but with a ugly blend between the frames.. especually if your looking at gun fire.. or special effects with blooms. Vsync off sometimes give me a headace.. as the framerate may also jump a lot more as the GPU gets over saturated then under utilized all of a sudden or stalls more often.

check the GPU advance panel if you really want to turn off vsync.

Have you tried maybe monitering the FPS with RivaTuner? That's what I use. Check out Gophn's guide on monitering your GPU temps and FPS. It may not be any different, but worth a shot I suppose.

I guess another question would be: Though it seems to be capped via Vsync at 30some odd FPS, does the game run very smoothly? Like as smoothly as you would expect a high end GPU to run a game such as WoW? WoW isn't the most taxing of video games, so it should perform flawlessly on high settings.

Some games are programmed to cap the FPS.

just make sure to disable V-Sync.

You can check www.tweakguides.com for some commands to bypass the framerate caps.

you better install RivaTuner.... for the GPU temp monitoring.... its VERY important.

Hey Gophn, I read the articles in www.tweakguides.com and found them to be very informative about Vsync, Triple Buffering, etc.

However, I'm having trouble locating where I can control the settings for Vsync. Where do I go?

    Thanks! :D

V-Sync is usually an option that is controlled by the game/application that you are using.

Oh I wasn't going to try to mess with the setting or whatever..I just read in tweakguides that a moniters hertz maybe? or refresh rate? (maybe I'm using wrong terms..too lazy to pull up the guide at the moment) dictated the maximum amount of frames the moniter is capable of handling at any given moment. So if your GPU was producing 100FPS and the moniter could only handle 60, the nearly half of the GPU's production is being wasted. I think this is where turning off Vsync comes into play?

In rereading this, this sounds a little wrong. So I'll take this opportunity to go and reread the tweakguide..haha
