I've encountered a rather bizzare program with my Sager 5760 beginning yesterday evening.
I was installing MATLAB (it's a mathematical package for those that aren't familiar). Anyway I got an error at around 95%, but didn't think much of it at the time.
I restarted my computer and didn't do anything for a while. About two hours later I realized that my drive wasn't reading cd's anymore.
However it reads DVDs perfectly fine. I think i've done pretty much every thing that there is to do. Uninstalled IDE controllers, physically took it out of the system and so on.
Nothing has helped so far. I'm not about to send it back for repairs since I need it for school.
So if anyone has any ideas or suggestions that would be great, cause this has been giving me a big headache.

the drive is DVR-K16RS, and the system completely recognizes it...just won't read CDs

    thanks in advance

This is when you call your dealer's tech support for help.

If the drive has failed, and you are still under warranty Sager will most likely cross ship you a new one so you don't have to send the whole laptop in. When you get the new one, just put the old one in the box and ship it back. They will want you to sign a form with your credit card information for security for the return of the old one...it is a pretty slick process.

My original optical drive would not close properly.
I went through the process paladin mentions above with Sager and had no problems at all. New drive been workin like a champ.

I've had the problem occur on a PS2. Would read most DVDs but not CDs and some movie DVDs. Tried to do a bit of "home fixing" on it. Ended up with a PS2 that could read CDs but not DVDs. Oh well :)

So yes, it can occur. With a PS2 there were two seperate screws to adjust the power of the laser. One for CD, another for DVD. The higher you cranked it up, the better your chances of reading discs were. There was also a higher chance of burning out the laser (like I did with the DVD one). However I doubt these screws would be available in a known location and you may as well get it repaired if it's under warranty.
