On my 5760, when I insert a CD, the removable DVD-RW/CD-RW drive makes a very loud vibrating noise, and it's making me a bit nervous that it might be defective.
It read the data fine, and seems to be up to speed, but it's clearly creating this buzzing vibration that's very unsettling.

This only occurs when using CDs, DVDs perform as expected.

    Anyone know whats up ?

Yeah, it depends on the CDs ;). Probably the CD you're using is not perfectly flat... Put it on a flat table and check of there are any imperfection.

Does it do that with all CDs?

Yes, it happens with all CDs. Happened with brand new, never been used before CDs too...

Do you think I should stop putting CDs in it to prevent things from getting worse?

The system is under warranty, I'm thinking of maybe taking advantage of that and having Sager ship me a new drive.

I would definitely shoot them a note and ask them what they think. They may have some ideas on how to figure out what's going on. Ask them before you jump right into trying to get a replacement.
On a related note, I had a problem with my optical drive not closing correctly when I got my 5760. Sager was great and even pre-shipped me a replacement so i didn't have to go without a drive for a week.

    yeah mine is loud too

what you have to do is hold your hand against the drive to reduce some of the vibration

Download samsung magic speed. or something similar for the optical drive.. Nero even has something called cd-speed.. the programs are made to force the drive to read cd's at a lower speed instead of the MAX performance 40x+ read speed that can spin even the most balanced of cd's out of whack..

I noticed that my CD drive was particuarly loud when I used a CD-ROM from a much older game. Battlefield 1942 to b exact. I haven't noticed an abnormal loudness on newer stuff though.

Vibration and sound are almost always attributable to the media, not the drive. You also need to make sure the media is snapped down on to the spindle all the way. It is not like a desktop where you just lay it in there.
