I bought my laptop in the late summer of 2007 and haven't had any qualms with it (it has been consistently pretty loud; I don't know if this is a problem with the model or not but it doesn't bother me too much) until now. For the past few days I've noticed that my desktop icons are jaggedy and that my computer has been suffering from a couple of random freezing attacks (where I can move my mouse but not open/close windows - the problem goes away after about 5 minutes). I've posted a picture of what I'm talking about with the icons.

wow you should def update your bios. please pm me for the newest version.. that may help.

it sounds like a conflict of some sort or maybe a heat issue. have you taken off the bottom cover to clean out the heatsinks and dust?? i would do that if not. if that does not help i would start to reinstall drivers and go from there.

hkman yes 100% sp1 is stable. i run it on all my machines now without a single issue at all.

 

I have not. Do you know where I could find this?

Sent you a PM. Unfortunately I'm still at school for another week and a half and don't have access to a screwdriver/can of air until I get back. I'll be sure to clean out the insides when I get back. If this doesn't work do you know a good site with my laptop's drivers?

EDIT: I updated my video drivers and the icon problem is gone. The computer is still suffering from the periodic attacks/noise though.

I just got back from school today and on the first day of summer decided to boot up World of Warcraft (having not played any games for a while). Lucky me my computer shuts itself off maybe ~1 hour and a half into playing (at fairly high settings but a stable ~30 fps). After updating my video firmware and bios the problems I mentioned in the first post are gone but my computer just turning off disturbs me.

I immediately thought of overheating, and the computer was definitely hot to the touch after the crash. I ran an orthos stress test to see what the deal was. In a 5 minute test my cpu temp went from ~38-30 C to 55 C. I don't know much about temperatures and such but this doesn't seem like enough to crash a computer? Does anyone know what's going on or at least what I should do?

EDIT: Might be important to note that even now with the load at 1-6% the cores are reading 59C on both CoreTemp and HW monitor. And my hard drive is at 65C!?

 

You are experiencing pretty high temps there, my system is very similar to yours and it gets nowhere near as hot.
Have you cleaned the dust inside?
Do you keep its back a bit raised, and on a solid(NOT FABRIC OR LAP) surface?
Orthos goes up very fast, 5 minutes is not enough, the heat builds up to a point where the fan starts to keep it under control,that`s after 20-30 minutes.
The hdd temp is pretty high, but it might be affected by other components`s temps.
Make sure you do the recommendations...

 

I opened up my computer today and cleaned up the dust with a can of air (there was some near the fans, but not a whole lot). There was a little dust on the side of the fans (you can see it on the pic below) but I didn't know how to get it off. My laptop is on a wooden desk and there's two semicircles (not a good description but I don't know the real name) that prop it up a little whether I like it or not. As for the orthos test I more or less lost control over my computer after five minutes (had to mass click the end button to the test to get it to stop) so do you think it's safe to do one for 20-30 mins?

I also took a picture of the insides after cleaning it up so if you guys see anything wrong please tell me.

EDIT: Just in case it's useful I checked the temps now and the CPU is idling at ~46-49 C and the Hard Drive is at 49-50 C.

 

It looks clean enough. Are both fans working? start the laptop and check if both of them are working.
About the icons, you`re probably using an increased DPI, which some drivers don`t appreciate that much. Even if you`re not , consider getting a newer driver just to make sure.
Use HWMonitor and Riva Tuner to monitor temps, since they`re pretty acurate.
Just follow the picture attached instructions to get Riva Tuner to properly show the gpu temp.(you`ll have to click the magnifying glass at step 2).
And 20-30 min with Orthos should not be bad. Just make sure it doesn`t get over 80C. If it gets high, there are nice Undervolting guides,but about that later on.

 

I checked the fans and both of them are definitely working. As for my driver firmware I updated them on May 3 (which is what solved the icon problem), should I look for new ones again? I got Riva Tuner and here are the results while idling...



I'll do an orthos test later as I have to step out for a while. I really appreciate the help eleron.

 

The GPU temp is ok, no cause for concern.
An Orthos test should show if the CPU is under the limits and a 3dmark06 test should show the GPU temps , whether they`re ok or not.
