    Hey guys.

I was having some problems with my laptop this weekend which led me to ultimately reformatting my hard drive. Formatting went fine, installing the main drivers went fine. Now, however, my laptop freezes up when I try to install the webcam. It gets up to the point where it says the system is scanning for new devices and then that's it. I've also tried installing this in safe mode to no avail. The system is fresh and the only thing on it so far are drivers, so I have no idea what's going on.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    did you try other drivers?

and did you make sure to disable UAC when installing those drivers?

Do you mean other drivers for that camera or other's on the CD? If you mean other drivers for the camera, I haven't connected the laptop to the internet yet so I haven't tried that yet. If you mean other drivers on the CD, the webcam's the only thing I have left to install that I need from the CD.

UAC? I'm not sure what that is so I'd have to say, no I didn't.
Edit: I did a quick google and UAC is something for Vista, but I'm running on XP.

Here are drivers for the camera:

    Vista 32-bit/64-bit driver:
    http://74.212.252.103/ftp/misc/10Camera_V570RU2.exe

    XP 32-bit driver:
    http://74.212.252.103/ftp/misc/09Camera_XPM570RU2.exe

if you are using Vista, UAC is the "User Account Control" ... the most annoying about Vista since it annoys you with prompts every time you want do anything.

here is how to disable it:
    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/wind...nt-control-uac-the-easy-way-on-windows-vista/

also, another way to install the driver is to just run the EXE rather than pointing Windows to the folder where the driver is.

Seems as though today is not my day. I think there may be an underlying issue that I didn't notice before. I plugged a flash drive into the laptop and now it's freezing up again. Maybe I'll have to format and try again?

if your system is freezing a lot, you should do a diagnostic of your hardware.

RAM: download and burn an ISO (image) of MemTest86+ onto a blank CD, and let your system autoboot from the CD to check for errors.

HDD: do a CHDSK C: /F (in Command Prompt)
... and benchmark the HDD with HDtune... as well as scan for errors.

CPU: do some stress tests with programs like wPrime and Orthos.

make sure you are monitoring the temps the whole time.

Well, I ran Chkdsk and I believe it found data in bad sectors but fixed it, and I ran memtest and my laptop passed with flying colors. Bad news now is that the laptop is totally unresponsive once it's fully booted.

For what it's worth, my M570RU has a similar issue where if I plug anything into the USB ports on the right side it will lock up the system about 90% of the time. Rear plugs work fine. I've never figured out why this happens and it's done it after several re-installs of Windows.

So no answers for you, but you're not alone. :(

any bad sectors is a bad sign of physical errors.

even if its supposedly fixed, bad sectors are still there.

you should try another HDD if you have one to test with.

Unfortunately I don't have another HDD to test with. But if it could potentially be the culprit would it be difficult to replace myself?

After repairing my XP installation I managed to boot it up to run HDD Tune. Perhaps you can make better sense of my results than me:

    HD Tune: Benchmark

    Transfer Rate Minimum : 19.8 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Maximum : 59.1 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Average : 44.9 MB/sec
    Access Time : 14.4 ms
    Burst Rate : 90.1 MB/sec
    CPU Usage : 2.5%

    HD Tune: Error Scan

    Scanned data : 152566 MB
    Damaged Blocks : 0.3 %
    Elapsed Time : 60:47

The Health Status appears to be ok. And I have yet to try and install anything else so I don't know if it's going to lock up again.

you have physical bad sectors on your HDD.

you should consider getting another HDD to test with.

I think you will find that the system wont freeze or crash.

Well the system is up and running for now. But I will look into purchasing a new hard drive for my laptop. :) Thanks for your help.
