Right now I game on my Desktop which is equipped fairly well:

    OCZ GameXtream700w|SB X-Fi
2x250gb 7200.10 seagate raid 0|X1900xt OR 7800GTX (SLI with right mobo)
    Gigabyte 965P-DS3 F10 bios|Stock Cooling for now
    C2D e4300 @ stock|CM Stacker STC-T01 w/CFF
    G.Skill DDR2 800 F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ

I can play CS:S at max settings at around 100+/- fps. I am planning to play Warhammer Online when it comes out, and want to get a DTR for Warhammer.

(i travel to my "upstate" home every weekend, and its straining to take my 37" Westinghouse HD monitor every weekend along with my 45 pound tower)

I would order it tonight, but everytime I rush into a purchase, I get shafted in the refresh lines that come out the next week.

MAIN QUESTION: Will the 8800m be that much better that I shouldn't waste my time & money with the 7950?

I have a lot of time before Warhammer, and don't want to rush into a $2000 purchase if I'm not going to be 100% happy with it.

By "refresh lines that come out the next week" I assume you're referring to the upcoming 8 700M GT, which is actually a bit weaker than the Go 7950 GTX.

Order it today with the Go 7950 GTX, no reason to wait. :)

And yes, the 7950 GTX is roughly on par with the x1900xt. CS:S at max settings (1920x1200, 4xAA, etc.) gets you the same 100+/- FPS that you're used to.

well when i got my last two laptops, the same model got refreshed a week or so later, for the same price.

I have heard the 8800m is coming out, but I dont want to order a 7950GTX if the 8800 is coming soon.

Also, remember that Warhammer online specs havent been released yet, so I'm thinking of waiting awhile before making my decision.

When is the 8800m supposed to come out?

8800m is expected this winter (maybe December) the earliest. Nobody here will guarantee you anything. The 7950 GTX can get you over 58 fps average on the CS:S stress test at absolute max settings with vsync on. Not bad IMO. I still play with anti-aliasing turned down to 2x. At 17" WUXGA, the extra overhead doesn't really add anything.

Hey bazald... I'm getting my sager 5790 in a couple of weeks. I'm really interested to know how you find the laptop. You also got the higher end processor (I'm getting the 2.0GHz) and what motivated you to go bigger? And wondering why you got the 5400 rpm HDD too. Do you find the load time slower with the slower hdd?

(sorry pbcustom98, not looking to steal your thread... just burning questions! :) )

I think the 8800 is still some time off. I conversed with a Sager rep and the 8700's are going to be available on the 5790's in mid August, so the 8800 probably will not be out until the end of the year. (Which is what a lot of people have been predicting up to this point anyway).

If it were me I'd get the get the 8700 as opposed to the 7950 card, as the drivers keep getting better and the performance follows right along with it. Plus there have been a handful of notebook reviews recently that have show that the 8700 appears to be equal to the 7950 in performance.

the 8700 is close to the 7950 at lower resolutions, but not at native WUXGA resolution. however, i don't really care about running games at max res, so im going to get the 8700. also, the 8700 uses less power and runs cooler, which translates into more battery life

I don't believe Sager would have gone through the trouble of making the 8700M available if the 8800M was close to being released. We are definitely some time off yet before a faster (read: 256-bit or larger memory bus) 8M series card is released.

Looking at your current setup pbcustom, I'd recommend the Go7950GTX. It is about as fast as a desktop 7950GT so it is on par with your desktop X1900XT. Nothing short of a Go7950GTX SLI setup is going to match the 7800GTX SLI setup in your desktop and unfortunately a setup like that runs $3k+.

Astute observation. Perhaps Clevo/Sager will want an entirely new system with the 8800m to show off at the shows in January.

    1) I'm loving it so far. The build quality is great, the speed is a huge increase off my previous notebook, the screen is beautiful, and it works great in Linux too.

    2) I was motivated to go higher because I like to do many things at once, such as running Linux in a virtual machine while listening to music and coding/testing a game in Windows. I wanted to go quad core in the NP9260, but when that failed, I went for this. As I will be using this in a warm environment part of the year, it is probably for the best...

    3) I was able to get more HDD space by dropping down to the 5400 RPM HDD. I've found in the past the slight speedup is not worth taking less space. Space always matters to me because I run multiple operating systems, including virtualized operating systems, and because I like to carry quite a few files around with me too - not to mention that game installations are rather large these days. FYI, seek time matter much more that RPMs most of the time anyway.

Yea, I have similar specs as you bazald except I went with the T7500 and 7200 RPM 160GB, and I tossed fedora in a vmware server vm and man it runs great.
