Hello everyone! I've ordered a Sager 5791, which will be arriving in a few days, and I was wondering what kind of software I should download to stress test my laptop with, and make sure everything is working 100%. I'm looking for suggestions on any software that is typically just a good idea to install for general pc health as well. It might also be helpful to pool the links in one place for new laptop owners. I'm a computer newb (so please correct me!), but the few ideas I have are:
- some kind of temp monitoring software, like speedfan? ( http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php) Zfactor posted about how his heatsink was not properly placed over the cpu I believe, so perhaps a temp monitoring software would be a good idea? Here is a link to undervolting CPU if temps are a problem: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=124420
- 3d Mark? I know nothing about this, but should I do a graphics stress test and compare with 3dMark results from other reviews? If there is a specific software used for this, a name would be much appreciated. What about PCMark? 05 or 06?
- Memtest? Is it a good idea to change the voltages of your computer components (like memory) to optimize temperature and speed? If so, I guess I should look into some more detailed guides about it--otherwise, is it a good idea just to use memtest to make sure memory is functioning correctly?
- General Useful Utilities: Some of the things I like to have on my pc's just to keep them in good shape are...
anti-vir personal edition (or some equivalent anti virus software)
spybot search and destroy
adaware
Edit: As for useful software, definitely check out this website: http://www.akajohndoe.com/ and go to PC Security under his PDA section. It has a very clear breakdown/description of free essential software that he uses (seems like a great resource!).
Im not sure if using multiple anti-spyware software is bad for your computer (if they conflict or not), so maybe someone can elaborate on what an adequate combination of virus and spyware protection software would be (or perhaps even if one specific program is sufficient).
- Anything else that's useful?
Ok, thanks for your time!

This is a great idea - I just ordered two of these units (one received) and need a systematic way to check all systems to ensure they are both functioning correctly. Maybe we could create a wiki-style diagnostic protocol that checks everything...

Dont forget about anit-virus software....I cant stand Norton
, its alright, but not for me...theres also free alternatives too, like AVG free!! I use it and love it...and its FREE
Get it here : http://free.grisoft.com/
For free anti-spyware you could try out Ad-aware and Spybot...Ive never used these before...Ive always used Spy Sweeper and it has done a great job for me, but ya gotta pay for a subscription each year...it's like $20USD
Also using FireFox helps out a lot too
Opps sorry didnt see that you mentioned that already...my bad -
