    Sager 5793 Beeping!

I received my Sager 5793 yesterday. When I boot up, sometimes even before I get to Windows, I get a constant loud beeping through the speakers. It's about 1.5 second beeps, with a 1.5 second pause, then beep.

I hit Fn+3 and the beeping goes away. I can hear my fans go into medium. When I go to Fn+1 for automatic, or Fn+1 for high speed fans (and I hear them come on), the beep comes back.

I am using RivaTuner2.09 to monitor my GPU temp: 49C at this time.

I use CPUID Hardware Monitor, and get:

    Temperatures
    THRM 58C

    Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo
    core#0 53C
    core#1 52C

    GeForce 8800M GTX
    GPU Core 49C

    Hitachi HTS542525K9S
    HDD 47C

My system bios is 1.08. I had the KBC/EC Firmware of 1.00.08. I got the 1.00.07sh from powernotebooks.com and flashed it successfully. The beeping persists.

    My laptop specs are:

    Sager 5793
    Intel T8300
    GeForce 8800M GTX
    4GB DDR2 RAM
    1GB Intel Turbo Memory (Robson)
    250GB 5200rpm HDD

I saw a thread about a 9262 having a similar issue and a KBC firmware update resolved it. My update did not. I was able to control fan speed in 1.00.08 using the Fn+1 and Fn+3 functions (didn't watch fan speed, but I can hear them ramp up and down).

Does anyone have any good ideas? Am I destroying my laptop by using it despite the beeping (or rather by using Fn+3, which turns it off)? Thanks for any help!

Edit: after some more testing, this only comes up when the fans go to full power. I hear them ramp up, and the beeping commences. If I leave it in auto, I don't get the beep until the fans spin up to high. So basically, I have loud, constant beeping when fans are under full power.

Sounds like an overheating issue. Especially when correlated with full fan blast.

Are you using the notebook on fabric or blocking the fans/vents somehow?

My temps are fine. It does not beep when running on medium fan speed. The problem only occurs when the fans are running high. If I leave the fans on high, I watch my temps drop (but it beeps the whole time).

I'm thinking now I might have a faulty fan. I tried CPUID Hardware Monitor and SpeedFan, but neither reports my fans' rpm.

They won't , fan speed apps don't work with the RU.
So you say it beeps only when fans are on high?
That is weird,I sugest you contact support right away then. A new system is not supose to do this, heck, not even a old one.
If it's not overheating, which you ruled out, it's probably hardware related.
That or some software incompatibility ...

Thanks, eleron. I'm suspecting hardware (a bad fan, perhaps?) at this point, too. Good info about the fan speed apps.

My main suspicion was overheating since the systems are design to beep whenever a certain temp is reached. Never have I heard that they could beep only when fans are on high, regardless of low temps. Might also be a corrupted driver /KCB firmware.

All in all,it's best to contact support. A new system needs some time to settle in before starting to mess with it on your own ;)

Did you check your event logs to see if anything that seems related to the problem got logged?

My first speculation, based on the fact that it only occurs with fans high - when they're pulling the most current - is that it's a power-related problem on the motherboard.

I would definitely call support and get an RMA if they can't ASAP come up with a good resolution.

Nothing correlates to the event log (I tested thoroughly since I can turn it on and off at will).

The beeping is a constant on and off. Shyster, I think that explanation is the most logical one so far. I am awaiting the real tech support guys on Monday. Hopefully this is a BIOS or KBC/EC fix or I'll have to spend about a month sans laptop...

Well...if nothing else, this can be called a rather curious issue. Keep us posted on what you find out. I for one am interested to know what the real cause is. Lol, sorry to be turning a frustrating experience for you into a science experiment. I don't mean to be trivializing your problem...I know well how annoying a malfunctioning computer can be >.>

try flashing to the clevo version of the 1.00.08 bios. then reflashing the 1.00.07sh firmware.

    1.00.08: http://rapidshare.com/files/114849739/57RU_108.zip

    1.00.07sh: http://rapidshare.com/files/112839512/1.00.07sh_full.rar

also you may want to open the bottom up then set the notebook on its side and just make sure the fans are working correctly. this was you can also check that the heatsink is tight on the cpu and the northbridge.

the cpu temps you have look high if that is during idle? what cpu is it? and if those are not during idle what are you temps during idle after it boots and nothing is touched for a min?

if its idling at 50+deg or so then with only a little extra load it may run up hear 70+ or higher during spikes... most of the core 2's idle around 35-45 or so give or take a couple deg.. mya not be at all but worth a look.

No problem, Callidor. I fully intend to document my journey so others can avoid problems in the future.
BTW - what temperatures should I be okay with? I usually run about 40-47C on my CPU, 43C on my HDD, and 41C on my GPU while just browsing the Internet. What is the upper limit on what I should push? If I run CoD4 my temps get up in the 70s pretty quick, so I don't do it...

70c seems a little warmer than usual. Mine never goes above 62c on just on auto fans. Using the max fan toggle can drop temps down into the high 50s.

    That depends.
For the GPU 70C is normal.
For a penryn, that is high, usually never above 60C ..
Try Undervolting the CPu and it will lower the temp, link to guide in my sig.

    Thanks for the replies!

My GPU can hit about 80C when gaming with medium fans on before the high-speed kicks in (at which point I shut it down due to beeping problem). The CPU hits about 75C or even higher.

I have undervolted already using that guide (awesome guide, btw). I lowered temps, but I cannot push it too much (currently at 1.0875V on top multiplier) because I cannot run the Orthos test for too long before I worry about temps. I am down to 38C right now with a bunch of Office documents and Firefox open :)

I think at this point I'll wait until Monday and talk to the tech guys. I don't want to flash the BIOS and KBC/EC again unless they send me the file, 'cause I have a feeling I"ll be sending this one back in for repair and I don't want to void the warranty just 'cause I'm impatient.

Woah, 75 for the cpu even with medium fans on is REALLY REALLY high. Think its a hardware issue.

^ powernotebooks.com. They've been helpful, but I'm in Iraq and got my laptop about midnight Saturday morning, so I just missed tech support for the weekend.

No it's not. Sager said that the medium fan speed stays there until the temps get too high, so 75C is a safe zone according to them.
I had this issue too and talked it over with Sager and Paladin44 .
    It's fine.
    Whenever you're gaming ,disable medium mode,simple as that.(with Fn+1).

Update: the CPU fan was not starting at all. For whatever reason, in medium I did not get warning beeps. When I bump the fan slightly, it starts just fine and seems to run just fine, too. They will be sending out another fan, but in the meanwhile I have a workaround.

I am running an Orthos stress-test right now. So far, after 3 minutes (at 1.0625 my CPU is only 38C). Before I could only run about 2 minutes before I hit 75C.

Thanks for the help everyone! And thanks to Allen at Sager!
