Sager 5793 Bios File

Just curious, anyone know why Sager does not include the bios file either on their update CD or on their website? Does this mean if there is an update, you would have to send the notebook back to them for flashing which seems to be a rather large waste of time, money, and resources.

I like to have a copy of the files for just in case purposes and this is the first time I have never had a bios included with the utilities CD.

 

Yeah, I found this out when I was looking for updated 1.00.08 BIOS which supposedly stops the underclocking of the 8800gtx when using other drivers than the stock. Through a long email conversation, I found out that they don't have any idea of a BIOS that stops the underclocking. "The 1.00.08s BIOS is only for the extreme cpu's." Even then, they wouldn't just send a copy to me. They want the machines sent back for reflashing the BIOS.

If they're worried about other Clevo Resellers using their BIOS, I think they could password protect a portion of their website. It would be possible to use the email you gave at the time of purchase as a username, and your serial number as a password. There, you could download the most recent BIOS for your device, which is identified by your serial number. I know this would be a bit of work, but it could save a lot of money and time from sending computers back and forth.

That idea would take not a lot to implement and Futuremark does it when you want to download a product you bought from them. Just type in your supplied user name and password, select the file you want and your done.

 

Sager isn't worried about other Clevo resellers using their BIOS files. They simply do not want any customer to risk a bricked notebook unless they (Sager) KNOW that the BIOS update will fix the issue the customer is experiencing. If you need a Sager BIOS update, just contact your reseller (or Sager directly) and explain why you need it. They'll be more than happy to get a copy to you.

The BIOS updates generally come from Clevo, anyway, and I think this non-public release policy comes down from Clevo, as they never host BIOS updates on their own site, either.

 

Actually, when I talked with one of the tech support reps by email, he said this- The unit came with Vista order then I can't sent you the BIOS file because the MicroSoft control the BIOS for VISta so we can't email you the BIOS file.

Now I'm not quite sure how Microsoft gets into the picture since the bios chip is made by Phoenix, Clevo does the micro-code for certain parts of the motherboard and the PLL supplier handles that chip specs as well. Phoenix is usually the one who does the overall programming and Sager simply adds its logo pic to the bios file at the appropriate place.

In any way, if I want to have the bios re-flashed for any reason then it has to go back to Sager to have it done.

My cousin was here on a two week visit and he likes to game more than I do. In an effort to get the video card up to its full potential, he read somewhere that the Eurocom 1.0.08 bios would let you do it. So little did I know that he got that bios file and flashed the Sager 5793 with it.

No harm done but of course, it now has the Eurocom boot screen instead of the Sager 'The Power People' or something like that. I would not mind so much if it at least increased the video clock rate but everything stayed the same. The bios and drivers for the Nvidia card are terrible.

Anyway, I'm way to busy with college work to deal with this now and will have to wait until May to get the original bios back from Sager and maybe upgrade the CPU at the same time.

Don't know. I would have to assume it was shipped with the np5793.
