I just got my sager 5793 today from Xotic PC. Yay!! I was scared from reading some other posts but got lucky and no dead pixels, double yay!!

So now I have my beautiful new machine (trying to get used to vista, really not liking how the programs are listed in start menu) and I'm wondring where to go from here. Any advice on what to uninstall (like the preloaded powerdvd and nero stuff?) and what to upgrade like video drivers?

    I'd do the following:

download nvidia system tools 6.02 for temp monitoring and overclocking
    ccleaner
    auslogics disk defrag

these 3 programs will keep ur stuff in tip top shape.

I like free ones (like AVG or avast!) since they do the same thing, but never need to pay subscription fees.

I all about bang for the buck.

Try Avira. I've never had it slow anything down and it's known as having great detection rate.

There is a free version www.free-av.com but the paid version (which I use) is only about 27 dollars for a year. Trial here: http://www.free-av.com/en/products/2/avira_antivir_premium.html

    Another plug for avira:

I got an e-mail in my spam folder about a failed UPS delivery...it said I needed to print out the attached invoice and bring it to the warehouse to pick up my package within ten days. I am actually awaiting an accessory from xoticpc so (stupidly) I downloaded the attached file.

You've probably guessed it by now...it was a virus! Luckily Avira is awesome and caught it, saving my brand new NP5793 in the process.

Also, the Avira virus scan is called "Luke Filewalker"...what more do you need.

I second Avast, I have been using it for a few years now on many computers. I actually use Cyberlinks PowerDvd and have purchased the Ultra verison because it is the best software HD/Blu-ray player on the market (used on my desktop, no blu-ray in the lappy yet). But I have it installed on the lappy anyways just to keep it the same as the desktop.

A friend of mine used Kaspersky for about a year and did not like it. It is a very thorough program and does a great job, sometimes too good of job, inhibiting programs you want running.

Nero, well the full version is useful for converting avi's, etc to dvd format so it can be burned and used on a regular dvd player. I have never used it for anything else. The partial version that comes with the system....found no use for it myself.

If you want a free image editor/paint program, check out Paint.net. A very nice and free program for those that do not want pay for paintshop pro or some other overpriced software.

I also use the before mentioned CCleaner (highly recommended) and auslogic defrag, though that was back when I had a XP machine. Have not used it with Vista.

    +1 for Avira :)

It found what Norton could not, and give specific details on the virus layabouts on my desktop which was under attack constantly.

Are you guys referring to Avira Professionial? Right now I'm using McAfee SecurityCenter and nothing has hit up my system at all as yet.

I used to use Avira Free Edition, but how is the professional in comparison to the McAfee I have, I might just switch in a year's time when my subscription is up if I'm impressed with your testimonials. :)
