Well many of you might remember my thread where my 8800M GTX fried and I got a replacement from Sager and so far its working fine. I was gaming recently and noticed the temperature at 101 deg C as reported by everest! I recall the temp being something like this last time before it fried so I immediately stopped.

What do you think is going on here? I mean if it keeps doing this I basically can't use this card to game at all. Do you think I should reapply my thermal paste? Can I do anything else? Ok thanks!

I would check the thermal paste as well as the thermal pads on the vRAM chips of the GPU to ensure they are correctly aligned.

If re-applying paste, make sure you use good quality paste like Arctic Cooling MX-3 or IC Diamond and that you thoroughly clean off the old paste.

Could it be a heatsink issue? I'd reapply the paste and possibly try to get your hands on a new heatsink.

Make sure you remove the heat sinks and check for dust between the sink and vent. Not too sure of the layout of the 5793, but my 9262 had a nice thick layer of dust preventing the hot air from escaping out the back

Thanks guys I'll try your suggestions definitely.

One interesting thing to note. When I play a old game like GTA III my gpu goes to about 82 or so, but if I play Trine, it goes to 95.

I didn't know the graphical demand of games had that powerful of an effect!

Did they send you a replacement and you had to install it yourself? What is the temperature like when you have fans at full blast? I would check to make sure the fan for the GPU is working correctly, it could be defective.

I installed it myself but a local computer guy did the paste for me because he did it for free. I went to buy paste but then he just said don't worry I'll do it and I think he just put a drop in the middle and then put the sink on top instead of properly spreading it etc.

I don't think the gpu is defective because it runs games fine its just hot. On full blast I can get the temps down to about 50 deg C.

My teachers always tell me if I was in the ring against the English language, it would tap out before the fight begins. :D

Anyway, I meant the fan that blows onto the heat sink that runs to the GPU (video card).

Ya I think I am talking about the same fan. When its on full I can get the system to 50 deg C sometimes into the 40's. Fullblast = Fn + 1.

I would take the heatsink off and check if the paste spread ok from the pressure of the heatsink.

You might have a bit of a gap there and if that is the case you would need a copper shim.

The graphical demand of games is a huge factor in GPU and GPU temperature. If you want to test your max GPU heat, I'd run the Crysis GPU or CPU benchmark about 30 times at full settings. That will give you an accurate idea of your max GPU temperature for most games.
