I recently started having video problems with my Sager 5796. I have a Nvidia 9800M GTX and I'm running Win7 x64.

When the problem began, I would get rows of blue squiggly lines covering the entire screen. Eventually, after starting up in safe mode and rolling back my video drivers, I figured out that the display would work perfectly fine with the Windows default drivers.

Well, not being satisfied with the default drivers, I tried several older versions of Nvidia's drivers. Unfortunately, that only made it worse. Now, when I start the laptop, all I get is a black screen (the backlight is still on). I know Windows is still starting fine, because I hear the sound windows 7 makes when it boots up.

Can anyone help me figure out a fix for this? At this point, I would be happy with the Windows drivers if we could get it back to that :).

That doesn´t sound good. Maybe your 9800m GTX is dying or the VRAM is defective.
Do you see the Boot screen, the BIOS, the start-up screen of windows?
Maybe you can try to boot in safe mode by trying "blind".
If you can see BIOS or anything else before windows, try to use the WIN-DVD to maybe load another Restore point.

Sounds like a defective GPU. nVidia GPUs are infamous for failing after 1-2 years thanks to nVidia using cheap- solder.

You can try baking it as a temporary solution, but the best would be to buy a new card.

I experienced the exact same as you (backlight on, no image) and my GPU was defective, so..

No there is no image on the screen whatsoever once I turn it on. I have tried blindly loading up safe mode, but I have had no success getting any kind of image.

I was afraid the video card was going bad. Guess I'll have to start looking around for a new one.

    Thanks for the input dudes.

Yeah you could try the bake method which I have done a few times now on the 9800m gtx. Each time I would get vertical blues lines at boot and couldn't get into windows unless removing the nvidia driver in safe mode. Have not had the screen blank before. Once had it covered completely in colored squares and lines before baking though.

I should add that baking did work for me. I don't dare try to install the nvidia drivers, but everything is working fine with the windows default drivers after baking.

Does anyone know of a good place to shop for notebook gpus?

Thanks guys, this just started happening as well to my NP5796. Brad from XOTIC quoted me $675 for a replacement. OUCH!!!

I baked mine and viola, all is well. I am curious, for those of you who have baked it, how long before you see signs of the issue re-occurring? If I have to bake it every 2 years I am OK with that LOL.

Consequently mine is even running the Nvidia drivers as well. :D

    Happy Holidays everyone!!!!

Well I have baked mine many times and haven't got 2 months each time so I wouldn't expect to get 2 years. Each time I leave it in 1-2 minutes longer and it does seem to last for a bit more. Just don't want to push it and ruin it completely.

I got the removing and reinstalling down really quick lol so I think I will just wait till I need a more powerful laptop and will go with ATI this time instead.
