Randomly, while doing anything with my computer from word processing to browsing to playing WoW, my cursor will freeze up for a second, then start to move itself towards the edge of the screen. When I try to reposition the cursor, it drifts back towards the edge of the screen. If I leave my finger on the touchpad, it will anchor the cursor until I lift my finger. I only have the ability to move the cursor horizontally across the screen. If I want to try to move it vertically, I have to move my finger in and up to down arc across the touchpad.
I have downloaded the latest drivers. When I try disabling and re-enabling the touchpad by going into the Synaptics software, it doesn't work.
What am I missing here boys and girls?

hi and welcome to nbr
have you tried the Fn & F1 key to disable/able the touchpad. -
i had similar problems on my dell inspiron 1545 from time to time.. found out it was the way they attached the ribbon cable to the mobo.. came loose over time. reseated it, and a bit of tape to secure it, and i haven't noticed a problem since
of course i can't comment on your specific problem, but it may be something to check into -

When you are typing, turn off the touchpad Fn+F1 to prevent your mouse cursor from jumping and shifting your sentences around.

The wandering cursor issue sounds like possibly moisture on the surface, as for locking up momentarily that can be due to palm check being on where it'll disable it's self temporarily when any keys are being held down at the same time it's receiving input.
Setting palm check to the lowest setting will disable that locking, palm check is on by default.
Hope that helps. -
The problem is not happening solely when I type. It happens sometimes when I'm playing WoW and running around, or scrolling down a web page.
I haven't had it happen since I started this thread, but when it happens again I will try Fn+F1. I assume that I had been doing the same thing as this by disabling through the Synaptics software.
Checking a loose ribbon cable may be beyond my level of comfort. I'll have to look into it, as computer maintenance at that level is something I am just learning.
Thanks for all your replies! When it happens again I'll be sure to give you some feedback. -
might be worth trying a cordless mouse or replacing the mous you use as that could be faulty and conflicting with the touchpad.
