I'm still on the edge about buying an 8150 and an 8170. I was hoping that you guys could help me out by letting me know if the 8150 / 8170 is SLIC 2.1 compatible or not, and or if you have full APCI settings and options for speedfan and or other 3rd party fan control programs.

The reasons I ask is that like the Acer 5672 that I use currently, I'd like the option of controlling the fans and or thermal limits of the pc.

Any vendors and or users able to confirm this for me? I'm 99% sold on a Sager, but I'm just needing that extra push off the diving board ;)

    **edit**
I should mention that if you don't know if the 8150 and 8170 are SLIC 2.1 compatible or not look here for a program to tell you - http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/6925-SLIC-ToolKit-x86-x64-(Includes-PKey-amp-Cert.-Backup)

I can tell you right now you can control your fan... I'll take a quick look at this "SLIC" program and be right back.

Edit: So exactly what do you want 8150/8170 users to do with this program?

Iris, how do you control the fan? I've tried everything I can think of. Speedfan doesn't recognize anything on the chipset. I've tried Nvidia Inspector, MSI Afterburner, etc. for the GPU fan as well and the fan is not detected and greyed out. The only real control is Fn+1 for max speed. The fans are controlled by the EC Embedded Controller Firmware and I don't know of any software that can control it.

    How do you do it?

If you're checking to see if these machines have an embedded SLIC 2.1 table in bios or not they don't fyi.

If you're wanting to see if you can add one yourself for the time being it might be impossible, none of the bios modders seem to have any experience with amibios8 yet which these machines use and none of the oem editing tools have leaked yet for it either.

    Just my 2 cents.

I can't see any speeds or anything for my fans, as well. Is it something to do with Sandy Bridge, I assume?

Thats exactly what it is at least for the time being, I'm sure as time goes on software will support the controller used in these machines for manual fan control.

If theres software already out that does support these chipsets I haven't seen it yet, not saying it doesn't exist though, I have only checked a few apps since it's not a high priority for myself personally.

Thanks for all the answers =) Looks like I'm sold on Sager :) The simplicity of the systems and the fact that you can actually UPGRADE the laptop is just top notch in my book :)

I was leaning towards the Asus but it is just a turn off now with the pathetic case design and lack of user friendly upgrade options like the GPU and CPU. :(

The ASUS is much quieter and has a backlit screen though :( If the ASUS wasn't so ugly, I would have gotten it instead of the Sager.

We desperately need fan control on the Sager.

I have tried the latest SpeedFan beta and can confirm that it doesn't work with these laptops yet. I sent the author a report generated in the utility so it will encourage him to add support for it. I also sent him an e-mail about a week ago letting him know about my interest. I would suggest anyone reading this do the same!

So we all make a report, send a friendly email and maybe top it all with a small donation to the author?
    I can do that. :D

    Edit: Done

The other thing is if anyone is REALLY good with C++ or C Sharp coding you can reverse engineer the acpi tables yourself to manually control the fans.

Check out NHC's guide - Notebook Hardware Control (NHC) - Advanced information

Again i'm not a great coder, but those of you who are talented can take this task on in your free time :)

If Speedfan does update though, you'll need to be careful and watch your temperatures closely when adjusting it. These laptops already have close tolerances, and the fans spin up for a reason. Some minor adjustments shouldn't matter (and should help with the "pulsing" some are reporting), but just be careful that parts don't overheat as it'll shorten the lifespan on them.

The PayPal donation was a good idea, too. Just made a donation myself.

The CPU fan is not an issue for me but the GPU fan, I think there is room for some improvement.

Before I used the last EC flash, the profile would turn the fans on at 40° C. Now the new update turns the fans on when at 32° C. Is it really neccessary to keep the GPU that cool at idle clocks? I was thinking to reduce the RPM overall so that the fans stay at one even and quiet speed until around 45° C.

Looks like Alfredo, the author of Speedfan also wants to get support for it in SpeedFan. :D

That shouldn't be an issue. That's such a modest increase in temp that there probably wouldn't be a noticeable issue. That was more directed at those that would try to make the machine silent, or not notice that their fan profile was allowing temps to climb above 100C under load or similar.
