Hi, this is my first post on this site. I loved all the information...it helped me decide on which laptop to buy. I was contemplating on the Sager 8150 or the MSI GT680. I was going for the Sager when I found out that it would take at least a couple of weeks to build and ship. I needed a laptop sooner than that, so I went with the MSI which took only a few days. I received it a couple of days ago, and for the most part I love it. However, the fan is constantly on, even while no programs are running. It sounds like a small house fan on low, so I'm not saying it's very loud, but it's definitely louder than any other laptop I've used. It's actually even louder than my desktop. The last laptop I bought recently is almost totally quiet while idle or browsing online or running easy programs like Office, and kicks on when more resources are used, and of course gets hotter and louder when playing games. But the MSI is never quiet. It makes me not want to leave it on when I'm reading or otherwise engaged. I'm thining of returning it and ordering the Sager, but I'd really appreciate it if someone could let me know if the Sager 8150 is quieter, at least while idle. I don't expect anything to be quiet under heavy resource usage. Any feedback would be great, as I do not want to return the MSI just to discover others will be the same. I love the sound quality on this thing! Thanks in advance.

it seems like some 8150 users experience fan surging. the fan will kick on for a few seconds once a minute, or every few points.

although others dont have the surging. so it's kind of hit or miss it seems. i know i didnt have it on mine, ordered from mythlogic. but i know i saw at least one other person have surging from a mythlogic model

MSI models have a fan setting button on the upper left-hand section, just above the keyboard. The icon looks like a little fan. You can kick it into max mode where the fans will spin constantly, and your computer may have accidentally entered into that mode. See if you can find that switch (it isn't really a physical key, just a touch-sensitive "icon") and toggle through the different modes. It is the second icon to the left of the power button. You should be able to find the low setting which would cure your problem.

Let me know if that helps at all. :)

Thanks for the feedback so far. I did check to make sure turbo or the fan button were not active. They are not. It seems as if the fan on this laptop is just...always on and loud, even when there is no need for it.
