Hello,
I'm in the market for a new gaming/travel/school laptop this summer (looking to buy at the end of July) and I keep getting pointed in Sager's direction. The 8662 seems to be right up my alley but I really want to max out my spending at $1500. After looking at xoticpc and a few others it looks like this will get me the barebones system with maybe 1 or 2 upgrades. What layout would you all recommend that maxes me out with taxes and shipping at $1500? Also, any idea about the Sagers and the special thing that happens on June 26? Will Sagers be getting the same treatment as Best Buy and the other big names?
Thanks!!

Please note that with 1500 dollars, you won't get the best available out there. However, this is a good spec you might like with Sager 8662.
From Powernotebooks-
15.4" 1680x1050
GTX 260M w/1GB
Intel Core Duo P8700 2.53GH
4GB DDR3 Memory
320GB 7200RPM HDD
DVD writer
All other default stuff
3 Year Labor + 1 Year Parts Service
1482 Dollars
"Cash Discount" price 1437.54 Dollars
+shipping: 31 dollars standard.
No tax unless you live in Nevada.
You can lower the HDD to 250GB or any of 5400RPM, and/or lower RAM, and try a better CPU, but that's your decision. -
I'm good with going down to 250GB, heck the desktop I have at home now caps out at 80GB while my current laptop only has 40.

Think its still worth it with only $1500?

i would say yes, games are not cpu dependent in laptops. Its more important to have a higher gpu than a higher cpu. Plus someday when you find 200$ you could buy a new cpu. The 8662 is the best 15.4 out there.
Now if you were planning on doing lots of video editing, then i would say that another setup might be required but for this, you've got it made!

If you're good with 250GB, sure, why not? If you don't really care about HDD speed, you can even make it 5400RPM.
Sager 8662 is the best available 15" gaming laptop right now. It's under 1500 dollars too. -
are you installing your own OS? XP, Vista? Windows 7? Linux?
32-bit XP can only support 3GB of RAM, 64-bit can support 4GB. Keep that in mind when selecting the amount of RAM.
I would also recommend bumping down the hard drive and processor specs if you want to save money, the video card itself is pretty powerful. -
Oh, yes. Sager 8662 comes without having an OS installed unless you order it. What you can do is, grab Linux, or use Windows 7 RC until its release. You can pay for Win7 when you get some more $$, as long as you get one before March.
Make sure to read reviews of the model and resellers before purchasing. -
Nothing is Real Notebook Evangelist
Warranty probably isn't worth it since PC components are so cheap to replace if anything ever breaks. IMO the only time a warranty is worth it is if you are buying a mac.

There lies another problem, I'm pretty good with hardware but software is another issue and I don't have my own OS to load. Meaning I'm going to have to buy one and yes I do want to wait till after June 26 to hopefully get the free upgrade. Is this going to significantly raise my cost?

are you attending college/school? When will you begin?
I know my school provides downloads of various Windows OS (not 7 yet..) for free to the engineering students (like myself), so I was able to save my money. Perhaps you should do some research into the matter.
I've never bought an OS before..(the windows XP that came with my dell was pre-installed..and it was from dell, so it's not like I had a choice in whether I could install it myself or not) -

You could always install Windows 7 RC for now and get the final release once it comes out.
