Hello
I just upgraded to win7 x64 with a clean install and re-format (through use of usb boot) and my cd-rom drive isn't working anymore
it opens/closes/spins the CD and makes all that 'reading' noise of the laser going back and forth, but I just can't seem to get my computer to visibly 'see' the actual CD/DVD drive...
honestly, I haven't used it in a very long time, so I don't know if this occured before or after the upgrade, so I can't really blame win7 for it just yet... are there ways to check it to see what the issue is?
also just a win7 question
-I clean installed with touching absolutely nothing (yet), I see Sager has no windows 7 drivers for the 9262, do I still need to install all the drivers on my machine? (I know about the video driver, but that seems to be the only one that needs a manual driver install)
should I take all the 9262 vista64 drivers and force install them? like the intel matrix drive, card reader, etc?
I also get a 'Mass Storage Controller' driver missing, that seems to be the card reader (I can take it from the 5793?)
I know its a lot of info and questions, but i've been extremely busy with school, just had our midterm crit's, and it's time to get movin back into overdrive
thanks!

Try re-seating the optical drive and maybe boot an ubuntu live cd for good measure.
-
seems to be the cdfs.sys and cdrom.sys were disabled services for some reason
i did a reg fix and changed the values from 4(disabled and not to be started) to 1, but these did not fix it....
the services are still 'stopped' which i can't seem to get away from
even in siw (system information for windows gabriel topala program) my cd-rom drive is seen, with model, SN, temp, everything else...
any other suggestions? -
Use Windows update a few times, because the drivers may not come all at once, to install your drivers. Some may never come and you can install the Vista drivers for those devices.
As for the CD-ROM, check in your BIOS by typing F2 during boot-up. Is your CD-ROM as a bootable device?
If not, re-seat it and pray for it to work. If yes, check Administrative Tools / Computer Management / Storage / Disk Management to see if the CD-ROM is listed (Below the List of Disks) and if it has a drive letter attached to it... Good luck! -
Try burning a Linux live CD from another computer, and then try to boot to it from your computer. A Windows installation disc would work too...we just need something that is bootable from the CD drive.
Make sure the BIOS are set to allow booting from CD (default settings should do it), and when booting up try to select the CD drive (or just hit a key to start in a Windows installation disc's case).
If it works - the Windows OS on your computer is at fault. If there is nothing that will work outside of the OS, the computer is probably at fault. -
If it was working before the Win7 install, the issue is most likely software-related than hardware.
Go into Start -> Right-click My Computer -> Manage -> Disk Management
See if your CD-drive is listed there, and if it is, right-click it to assign it a drive letter. Good luck. -
for the mass storage device issue, which is your card reader, check this thread.

I did the upgrade instead of the clean install, it found all of my drives immediately after it restarted with the exception of the webcam. In case you haven't checked and you find a problem with your webcam the solution is here:

I never upgraded the CDROM drive's drivers, so i'm using stock vista64 drivers. In the device manager it states make and model of my drive, so the drivers work. -
thanks for the replies, really appreciate it (/incredibly)
updates;
as for re-seating, i did unplug the optical drive and put it back in, although i dunno if thats re-seating because I didn't de/attach any actual chord to the motherboard
config'ed BIOS numerous times trying CD-ROM (both IDE and USB) in different boot sequences, seems to be no help, and there actually is a win7 install disc in the drive so its just not seeing it (not even the BIOS, for the IDE controller it just says 'None' even when i try to config it to 'cd-rom' or 'auto'
the only place my system see's the CD-ROM drive is in siw.exe, so seem's to be a hardware issue (even though I CAN hear it try to read the disc when I put it in)
separate note, recently (1-2months) every time i rest my hand above the CD-ROM, it attempts to read it so that is probably the originating issue...
anyways, no time for the CD-ROM, i don't really need it right now to work
BIGGER issue... using a quadro fx 2700m in my sager 9262, and officially its not supported (compared to previous 1600m)
but the larger memory bandwith and overall performance of the card is SO much better than the 1600m (hard to go back to the 1600m after the 2700m... so for now its staying in)
every time I turn the laptop the laptop screen is visible UNTIL after the windows logo, then it goes black... I have to shut the screen, open it, hit FN+F7 a few times, then it finally see's it...
i tried 4 or 5 different drivers, using 186.61 now because it takes the least amount of lid opens and close's for the laptop to 'see' the screen (haha...meh)
even more of a problem (which I think/hope is fixed) is one core of my CPU(out of 4 on a q9650) sometimes (after windows update for some reason) runs CONSTANTLY at 18-19% and its labeled 'system interrupts' in resource monitor-
so that previous issue is the largest, when it happens, (which is mostly after a windows update...)
i'll post another update with clearer info later -
Try this registry patch for your optical drive:
http://aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip
Aumha.org says that this patch is XP only, but it works just fine in Vista, and should also work under Win7. The patch deletes the upper and lower filters on the drive's registry entry to clear out anything that may have corrupted them (iTunes' burning capabilities FREQUENTLY make optical drives disappear from the rest of the computer). -
I dont know if this is related but I've had my external DVD-R disappear in Win7 several times. It takes a real trick to get it working again (power on/off, disconnect USB, etc.). Had this happen on multiple machines. I get it recognized, but the driver refuses to install. Does is show up as an unrecognized device?
