I have a few lol... It has the same design as the Saegr 9262 (IE Desktop CPU) so for comparison puropses does anyone know of a good review of the 9262....
2. How long does the battery life last for simple surfing and or typing on the 9262.... predictions for the 9280 (im worried about the 130w I7 lol)
3. Noise, how loud is it when doing simple tasks? Gaming is obviously going to be loud![]()
4. picture of someone carrying it for size refrence...

Hello all, I have a few questions about the Sager 9280 also I am in need of a new laptop. I have chosen the Sager 9280 with the i7-940, 6g RAM & a 7200 rpm drive. I will be using this machine for work (Autodesk Inventor 11 & AutoCAD) as well as Gaming (UT3, Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, GW 2 etc.) I am replacing my current machine a E-machine M-6809 with AMD 3200+, Radeon 9600, 1g RAM & 7200 rpm HDD, Anyway here are some of my questions.
1. How will this system handle such games as Diablo 3? (I haven't found any specs yet, but what is your hypothesis?)
2. How will this system handle CAD applications? (The core i7 should run them fine but what about he Ge force 280m?
3. What is the deal with this "Modular" Graphics card port is it really as easy as the website suggests? I have never heard of the ability to upgrade laptop Graphics components and are they standard size? so in the future I could just by a Ge force 295 and stick it in there? http://www.pctorque.com/sager-9280-gaming-computers.php
4. When customizing you don't have the option to buy 2x 280's and run in Sli is this because you cant fit 2x 280's inside?
If I have listed any ignorant questions, please forgive me. Thanks -
Not quite sure what you mean by a "'Modular' Graphics card port" - if you're talking about the use of the MXM standards in Clevo systems, it basically means that the end-user can remove the existing, plugged-in GPU and plug a new GPU into the existing slot - generally, another version of the same GPU, but if you're really lucky, possibly an upgraded GPU that the system was not originally specc'd for (but don't get your hopes up too high on that score).

1. Easily will handle Diablo 3...when it comes out, the 280m is the most powerful notebook GPU
2. Quadro is one of the upgrades and will be a better choice, but the 280m should be able to handle them very well.
3. MXM 3.0 which means it has the newest standard GPU port so upcoming GPU's will fit in it... We as a people are becoming more mobile, and until this point people have never really needed to have a laptop as powerful as a Desktop so they can work on the go, as we do need this now adays high end laptops are creating better iterfaces (non-soldered) and have more readily available and easier to upgrade parts... so we are now able to upgrade our laptops the 9280 is just one of the best.... if not the best
4. Yeah because of the heat put out by the 280 and I would think size you would need an 18" laptop to fit it like the M980NU... Although many games do not have SLI support or not very good support so you will see small differences in fps, and in games without SLI you cannot even use the second card... Really the 280m is an amazing card that should handle anything you need for a couple years, and then hopefully we can just upgrade itlol
Hope this helped -
To put it bluntly, the fact that the 9280 has an MXM-compliant motherboard/GPU does not mean you can upgrade the GPU; it merely means that you, the end-user, can swap a burned GPU out for a replacement version of the exact same make and model of GPU. -

Sorry I did not mean to imply that all upcoming GPU's will be MXM 3.0 or naturally will fit... But that the new standard is MXM 3.0 at least for high end GPU's so hopefully we will be able to upgrade in the future...

Quadro is not an upgrade. You will have the choice of either the Quadro or the 280. Quadro is for CAD/Video rendering, 280 is for gaming, although if you are willing to overlook the fact that the 280 can do the samething as Quadro for less, then go that route (video that is not CAD).
The battery on this should be considered as a power backup considering that it gives you enough time to power down any major project your in the middle of during a power outage. In my old D900 it saved plenty of projects. Consider the extra time on it as a way to email everyone that you lost power and will be AFK until power gets back. -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
lol read the entire thing before criticism
-
Just that all my adsl/cable modems in the past have also needed power to function. No power = no internet for most people -
Unless you're on some sort of outside public wifi
, or you've just lost power in your part of the building, but the wifi is in another part.
-
True, but these are not the usual situations.
If you lose power in a public place, then that place probably also lost its wifi, and I'd say it's unusual to lose power in your part of a building, and still be close enough to get wifi from somewhere that still has power -

Battery life doesnt really matter alot anymore unless you fly alooot... more and more people are doing buisness on the move and so have powerful laptops they bring with them to starbucks or whatever and work from there... That's also why were now seeing upgradeable laptops and laptops with Desktop CPU's
-
Ok I stand corrected the 9262 offered the Quadro option, and somewhere it was brought up as an option with the 9280 again over the 280, but after looking at what is there so far its just the 280.
No where was I being critisizing I read his question and yours. I was merely pointing out what I thought was a fact that they were offering it as an option not an upgrade.
Also my D900 had internal modem(3g). Phone lines do not lose power in a black out. And I always carry modem card when needed. -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Cool beans no problem
-
I was just saying that that's not the case for most ppl.
Right...back on topic... -
Ok all, Thanks for the advice I am aware that the Quadro is Nvidias line of CAD cards and I would go that route but I am a gamer in my off time and cant give up that vice, so 280 it is. I am not concerned for battery life as I use it as a backup just as someone stated, this laptop will be more of a desktop replacement as the home office will be a nursery in a few months, which means my gaming and work etc. has to be mobile. I hope this upgradeable modular graphics card takes root as a standard it sure would be nice to have the option to upgrade, I guess well have to see. I had another question and I am not sure if this is the thread for it but the HDMI port on the side of the 9280 is able to plug into my TV, but can I game straight to my TV? or is there resolution issues? I have tried ALONG time ago on old TV's with s-video and the image was so blurry it wasn't possible to make out small print. Anyway does this mean I can sit my laptop on my entertainment center and use wireless keyboard an mouse to work/game on my big screen?
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Yes you can plug straight into the HDMI port on your tv to essentially use it as a massive monitor
, and you well get Great 1080p given you have and HD tv, and Im guessing you would go with the 1900x1200 display as well so no problems there... With the older Tv's it would be like trying to play your next gen consoles on them the small and fine details would be lost... so you would have to set it at a low resolution on the monitor

i can't wait for this one's little brother...a refreshed or redesigned mxm 3.0 compliant 5797.
Hopefully only another 4-5 months to go -
I wonder whether there will be a D901C update...
Exact same spec like D901F, but with Core2 CPU instead of Core i7.
Thus with the smaller LGA775 slot (and thermal, power, etc), the 17" chassis will be able to support 2x GTX 280M MXM 3.0. -
-
Yeah, I think so too.
It's just that usually, a vendor release a "bridge" product between the old tech and the new tech. -
On my new 9280 should I get the "0 dead pixel" Guarantee? The only thing I have ever seen a dead pixel on is a PSP.
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
I am having a hard time deciding too... Becuase I can't justify the price for the no dead pixel gaurantee... and if I did have a dead pixel wouldn't that be covered by the warranty (I'm getting the good one
) So I would just have to return it anyway
