Is the HS different for a extreme cpu? I currently have a 4810 and am toying with the idea of a 4940. But I know sometimes in machines HS's are different when you buy the extreme cpu.

    TIA!

Sorry not quite sure what you mean by HS. Could you clarify and maybe we can provide some help.

Edit: I think you mean heatsink right? If so I have not seen different ones for different CPU's

Yeah heatsink, sorry. Some laptops I've seen had 3 heat pipes for extreme CPUs vs 2 for non extreme? I might be thinking of something else.

I've seen Alienware do it on the 18.4" model, cant think of a Sager/Clevo that has.

There is one... but it won't be worth it unless you have 970Ms or 980Ms.

The P370EM heatsink had a third heatpipe that was shared with the slave GPU heatsink. The 680Ms were cool enough to do this without the slave getting too hot; the 780Ms and 880Ms were not, so they changed the format in the P37xSMx and P37xSM-A series. You could buy a slave GPU heatsink and a CPU heatsink for the P370EM and put it in your SM-A machine, sure, but only the 680Ms and 9x0Ms run cool enough to make it viable.

    Here, for reference:
    P370EM
    P370SM

I looked into this a while back in this thread.

Basically with the P370EM heatsink the CPU runs cooler by about 10C, but all that heat is squarely offloaded to the slave GPU, which in the case of 780M made it run too hot. Since 980M is supposed to run much cooler, you could try swapping in the P370EM CPU heatsink and see how it does. Just note you'll have also have to pick up a P370EM slave GPU heatsink to go if that's how you want to do it.

My guess is if you use Liquid Ultra and get a decent P370EM heatsink (ie one that has good die contact), you could probably run a 4.2GHz 24/7 OC.

I'd bet even more if he had a good, cool environment and propped up the notebook/had it on a cooler and was using max fans.

Thanks everyone, I am running 980m cards in it. Not sure I want to heat up the gpu anymore or not. I will probably just keep the stock cpu heatsink if I do decide to slap a 4940mx in. Have to see what the temps are like before deciding. Not sure I want to put that kinda money into a mobile cpu right, think my 4810 might hold me over for a while.

Well the 980Ms are cooler than the 680Ms, so you won't really need to worry if you do use it. I really want 980Ms so I *CAN* do it and OC my CPU.

Where would you obtain the heatsinks?

You could probably get them from RJTech, or ebay. If all else fails, you could probably harass Mythlogic for some too.

n=1 bought some himself; you could ask him where.

I bought all my Clevo parts from RJTech, they're pretty good.

If you don't intend to overclock beyond 4.3GHz on 4 cores and 4.5GHz on one core, the 4910MQ might be the best choice. The MQ chips seem to be binned much more for efficiency, to the extent that Ethrem's 4940MX needs an extra 0.1V (no not a typo, that's a full 100mV) to run 4GHz stable compared to my 4900MQ.

You can squeeze 3.9ghz ish out of the stock cooler and maybe 4 to 4.1 out of the EM heatsink. I'm not sure that is worth the increase in GPU temps and the reduction in their max clocks if you are a gamer.
