I just had my Sager 9860 that I've owned for a little over three years completely shut off while I was using it. There aren't any signs of power going through as the power and charging indicators aren't lit and it smelled like something had burnt from the rear vents. Is this an indication of motherboard failure like I've read from some of the other posts around the forum. Unfortunately my warranty ran out so I guess there isn't much I can do unless I want to go through repairs. Would it even be reasonable to do this or should I just go ahead and purchase another laptop?

Welcome to the NBR forums.
when was the last time that you cleaned out the fans and vents thoroughly...?
if never, then thats why.
Read this for instructions to do so:

An extra thing to do for that particular notebook (to get to the CPU fans), you will need to remove the keyboard to get to them.
Read here for the easy instructions:

Gaming notebooks are a new thing, you must realize that you have to take some extra care of them over typical use notebooks:
1) Battery: to maintain the longevity of any rechargeable battery
- you must NEVER overcharge it [especially for long durations of time] by keeping it plugged into AC
- when it reaches 100% you should unplug it and let it discharge to 5-15%, then plug it back to power
- OR you can just charge it to 50%+ and remove the battery and store in cool place.. not the fridge [remember to use it occasionally 3-4 time a year to charge and discharge it].
2.) Heat: to prevent a healthy notebook from overheating
- ALWAYS use the notebook on a clean, hard & flat surface
- RECOMMENDED to be used on a notebook cooler... namely the Zalman ZM-NC1000 or ZM-NC2000
- check your fans underneath occasionally (at least once a month or two) for any dust clogs [clean them out with Q-tips and air cans/compressors]
- ALWAYS monitor the temps (CPU, GPU, HDD, etc..) to watch for fluctuations, which would indicate overheating by dust usually
(for Clevo notebooks) use the Fan Toggle to switch all fans to Max Speed when gaming and such.
By doing these simple things, your entire system will easily last for more than 3 years. -
from the sound of your description the motherboard is fried. you will either need to replace it or try to repair it. both ways are expensive and may not be worth it. i think still costs about $500 dollars if you send it in to sager in california to have a refurbished mobo outfitted. these 9860 (d900t) laptops are known to have faulty motherboards. i had 2 replaced on mine. -
in the most part, its usually overheating if he has been using it that long.
only the first revisions of the D900T had motherboard issues.
seriously, you cant take just your experiences into account. I have built many D900T systems... only a small number of them were faulty... the newer revisions were fine. -
Thanks for the reply. I had been cleaning the vents underneath and doing maintainance at least twice a month. I actually had my first power-off from clogged ventilation and realized then I needed to clean underneath there often because of the dust build-up. I'll probably not even bother repairing it since it seems to be quite an expensive process. Thanks again for the advice.

make sure to use a flashlight to see through vents... then use a lot of compressed air to push out any dust.
Also for your notebook, remember to use the Fan Toggle (Fn+F2) to switch all Fans to Max Speed to heat prevent overheats.
If you cannot toggle, then you need to update the keyboard firmware... its pretty simple to do.
