This is the issue. I'm a disabled vet who could only use 2 fingers to type ( both index fingers ) I do the chicken pick motion. I game a lot believe it or not so I'm all about gaming laptops ( cant use mouse ). I have an original M17X most of you know how everything looks ( mousepad under the keyboard, numbers to the right side, etc ) I am looking for the top of the line gaming laptop. I was looking at the MSI titan80 which can be configured to be a beast with SLI and max ram etc etc. The only problem is the mousepad is to the right side of the laptop which would make it IMPOSSIBLE for me to play or do things as smoothly as i do it with the normal laptop setups. So I went and look around and saw this Clevo P870DM-G at https://www.mythlogic.com/configure.php?id=182 which can be configured the same as the MSI with 1 problem the 17ich one still using the 15inch keyboard which makes no sense and i bet it is uncomfortable as heck. Then i saw the Sager NP9870-S ( Is it the same as the clevo above? ) Does it come with the same 15 inch keyboard if I order a 17inch laptop? Can they be upgraded with new tech as they come like MSI? MSI has the GT72 which has the mousepad and everything the way it "should" be or im used to, the downside it doesnt come with dual gpu's so its a no no for me. So any help here? Advice?

Hi there! You should try and see if anyone in the owners lounge for the Clevo P870DM has anything to say for the keyboard. The Sager is literally the exact same thing, as Clevo just sells it to Sager. That model specifically however, is probably the most upgradeable laptop in recent memory. It has desktop class cpu that can be upgraded, as well as two upgradeable mxm-b graphics card slots. Its a fantastic machine. You could also look at something like the MSI GT72 or Clevo P770DM laptops with 1 GTX 980 gpu which offer a lot more power than 1 980m. That being said the P870DM may eventually have that card option as well, and is the only other option for extreme sli configs. I hope you can find a powerful machine that makes you comfortable! Also the Clevo has GSync so its better than the MSI anyway.

Thanks for replying. Im a freak when it comes to performance and I always strive to get the best the market has to offer no matter the cost BUT as I mentioned it has to cater my needs because of my disability. ! GPU is not going to cut it for me.. It has to be SLI 980 which is the latest.. So that being said which one you meant is the most upfradeable? the Clevo one or the Sager?

The Sager NP9870 is built on a Clevo P870DM chassis, as is the Mythlogic Phobos 8715S. The keyboard is the same non-chicklet in the 15" and 17". Any DM model is socketed - upgradeable CPU, GPU, RAM, storage. The current P870DM is available with a single 200W 980 or SLI 980M. There will, likely, be a lower wattage 980 SLI version.

So the issue here its still going to be that small awful keyboard on a 17... Thats sad and I can not purchase such thing but bare the fact I have to stay stuck with this old m17x and NOT play dx 10 supported games... This is ridiculous

The P870DM (Sager 9870) has just launched from Clevo, so you might give it some time to get into some of the users hands here where they will get a full review uploaded and most likely hit on the keyboard quality. Yes it is smaller so not sure if that would work.

What about something like an Alienware 18 with dual 980m's? They only have Haswell right now but most of the other stuff is matching.

Alienware is another option. I didn't recommend because they have had heating issues recently, but if the new 18" is better that will work great, the haswell cpu is more than enough for gaming and it can have sli 980ms. Additionally the Sager/Clevo are the same computer so they are equally upgradeable. Again though wait for reviews on the keyboard, otherwise its better.

Nope.. Wouldn't risk this for a the LCD killing bug... These ones probably still have it from people who have received them... 1 of them already failed due to the LCD killing bug..

I wont do Alienware because they are propietory of their stuff. you cant upgrade them the way you can do the others. you can "MAYBE" upgrade the GPU once if you are lucky. I dont want to go back to Alienware. I want to get rid of this M17X

I understand, i hardly ever talk about alienware, it was just a thought for the SLI purpose. You could always check on the return policy with resellers and see about getting the P870DM and see if the keyboard is useable for you? Not sure that there is a perfect solution out right now though :(

I just got my 870DM-G and man, this keyboard sucks! Now I understand the concern of the OP, it's literally like a 15 inch laptop keyboard slapped onto this beast. It's very difficult to get used to :(

Just sitting here looking at all the space that is wasted making me think Clevo is really dumb to put this keyboard in this beast! Mind you, my hands are small like a girl.

Why would you want a huge keyboard if you have girl hands? I have somewhat girly hands and personally I don't mind 15 inch Clevo keyboards, just like I don't mind typing on my full-size mechanical keyboard for my desktop. I've typed on pretty much anything and everything and if I use it long enough, I just get used to it. I feel if you use your nice new laptop enough, you'll definitely get used to the keyboard. :D

It takes 48 hours to get used to it. Then you don't even think about it.

On a positive spin, the tactile feedback is just perfect, not too loud, not too quiete, every hit of a keystroke feels solid and has some quality to it. doesn't feel cheap at all.

There is no other beast laptop that can even come close to the P870DM-G bro you know it. So don't let some small accessory stop you from having the best laptop in the world.

Ill go back to my analogy.. Would drive a Mack truck with a toyota steering wheel? NO... Would you sit on a mini-cooper with a Mack truck steering wheel? NO.. So yes, having a 17 inch chassis with a 15 inch keyboard is child's play. I dont understand how clevo can be so cheap like that..To the poster who bought it and told me it sucks with that keyboard ( which it was what I imagine ) clevo is not the only beast. MSI gt80 titan has the same and i heard it runs even more quiet, my issue with it is the placement of the mouse pad. Impossible for me to use.

I mean, to me, the entire point of a 17 inch laptop is the 17 inch display, not the keyboard... All laptop keyboards are pretty ****ty for the most part...

Just for the sake of principles its not right.... Its not meant for that size of a chassis period. I can make 600000 examples and its the same. Just because you love a shirt to death, its the best shirt youve ever seen, its on special but you use large and the shirt is small. You wont but it, to have it in your closest just because Its ur favorite shirt and you love it.. Makes no sense. They should STOP being so damn cheap an put a keyboard for the size of it, no matter how "s****Y: they are as you say. the AW are NOT crappy at all.

I mean that's a fairly bad example... The 17 inch laptops are perfectly usable with 15 inch keyboards in my opinion...

Both shirt are usable.. Do they fit to perfection no.. Are they design to what they are supposed to be fitted to? No.. I dont even see why you argue something like such. You simply dont put a half an inch nail in a wall when it really needs a 1 inch nail. Its cutting ends, its wrong, and doesnt make sense. Being cheap is not an excuse.

I'm not excusing it I honestly just don't think it will be a problem for everyone. That's bad to hear that it's a problem for you but honestly I don't think it's a problem for everyone, since I know it wouldn't be a problem for me. If the keyboard size was the biggest complaint I had about a laptop, I'd be pretty happy with it and call it a pretty good laptop.

No point in getting mad about it. Clevo has been using 15" keyboard on 17"laptop forever and they aren't going to change. Same as Asus and BTW the MSI keyboard is not a full 17" either. Don't know what gave you the impression that Clevo's competitors for 17" laptops use full size 17" keyboards.
