I am finally getting back into PC gaming and for a variety of reasons, a nice gaming laptop works best for me. I really want to get into a 17.3" model with the 1070 graphics. My budget is right around $1600 and I have been scouring these forums for who people recommend to purchase from. When I go to the different pages to customize, a base model quickly becomes $2000+.

Should I look at the MSI laptops? Are the prices going to drop in a few weeks/months once demand drops a little? Should I look at the 1060 graphics so I can get the SSD and other upgrades I like?

I want to be able to play a range of MMO's and some of the newer games I see at the PAX's. I need this to last about 2 years before I hand it off to my son and purchase another.

    Thanks!

It's not likely you will find much worth buying with regard to specs in a 17.3 inch model for under $2,000. Adding only a couple of nice features will gobble up the difference even for tiny little 15-incher. If you plan to do much gaming on it, it would be best to spend a little extra for 1080 and ignore anything less than 1070 for the GPU. If you lower your standards and consider anything other than a Clevo you can pretty much bank on the idea of it having a modest BGA CPU and perhaps BGA GPU.

The cheapest 1070 model I've seen is from Asus, the GL502... It's 15.6" though.. The Clevo P670 is the 17.3" you want and if you get it with the bare stuff and get your own RAM + SSD's, you should be able to do it in 1800...

    Is this lowering my standards?

I feel like I am missing something in this build vs. what I could do with HID, LPC...etc.

Edit: Please dont take my first question as snarky, it is not meant to be.

Hi, no I don't think it is snarky. That's a legitimate question, but I cannot speak to what your standard or expectations should be. If you're not going to do any overclocking to speak of it should be fine. With a soldered (BGA) CPU you will have some performance limitations that are not really an issue with a CPU like the 6700K. The one thing you may find undesirable about it is switchable graphics. Some people love it and others hate that.

The machine on NewEgg is the Clevo P670RS-G. Compare what you get with that one to the pricing from HIDevolution, LPC-Digital, XOTIC or other Clevo/Sager resellers. I have never heard of that brand before. There is something to be said for buying one from a brand you can trust if something isn't right with the new machine and you need to RMA.

Here is a thread dedicated to that particular model and what you read there may help you make an informed decision about that model: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/clevo-p670rs-g-questions.794970/
