I won't be going to college until next year but I want to replace the laptop I have now sometime before then (it's 3+ years old now and a little too big/weak for what I want to do with it).

So, does anyone have some somewhat accurate information about when Nehalem will be released for laptops? If I can, I'd like to wait for it because according to some benchmarks I saw, a 2.66GHz Nehalem processor is equivalent to or better than a 3.2GHz Penryn processor... insane.

I'm asking because I know some retailers are here and you guys usually have some more accurate info than rumors. Most of the dates I've seen are conflicting, so does anyone know whats up?

Nobody has any idea of what's going on, or when, other than say, Q4 2009 or 1st half of 2010, Nehalem will be released at all. Further, Nehalem will come first for desktops only - which means that the only Clevo that would be capable of incorporating a Nehalem processor would be a successor model to the D901C.

Keep in mind, none of the current Clevo models will ever be able to accomodate a Nehalem processor, and so far Clevo hasn't even presented a working concept model for a new notebook that will.

If you want something that's as future-proof as possible, and want assurances that you'll have it by next fall (i.e., fall of 2009), then about your only real option is the D901C.

I see.. I'll have to think about it but I have plenty of time. D901C just seems way too big to be a laptop.

It's really more of a flattened 'tower', with a screen.

If you want something other than a DTR like the D901C, you'll have to wait even longer; I've no doubt that notebook class Nehalem processors will take even longer to find their way into retail production.

Agreed; the D901C is not a laptop - as in you can jauntily rest it on your lap - it's a notebook - a wonking big OED-sized notebook!

Nehalem is next year`s big thing. And Nehalem laptops are at least 1.5 years away...

Agreed. And since computer-years are even shorter than dog-years, that's probably the equivalent of 15 years in computer-years. :p

Ok, here's some info straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak. According to this news item, Intel is planning on releasing the notebook-class Nehalems in the third quarter of 2009 - that's just about a year from now - with the codename of Calpella for the notebook Nehalem platform. Credit for spotting the news item first goes to Ayepecks, who posted a thread on it in the hardware components and aftermarket upgrades forum here.

I long for the day when Bloomfield is incorporated in the next revision of the D901C DTR.

    Me too..

The nehalem desktop chipset will be realesed in october (hopefully) this year. Perhaps our Clevo friends in Taiwan can present something before next year ends. They don't get slowed down by hamburgers and cocacola and s**t, so you never know :)
