Whats the independent GPU button do? (such as on np5170)
Turn off and on optimus?
Cause I was considering one of these laptops but require the option to turn off optimus in Linux.
Is this possible?
The other thing.. I noticed Xotic PC is still selling laptops with sandy bridge processors.
Are they safe to buy?

It depends on which model of Sager/Clevo you're trying to buy. Only the NP5160 and NP5170 feature Optimus. They have the lesser Nvidia GT540m graphics card. I'm not sure if that button controls the function or not. If you go any higher than those models, Sager/Clevo does not offer Optimus.
It is in fact safe to buy Sandy Bridge processors from any reseller rep'd on this forum right now (including xoticpc of course), as long as you're willing to wait until late March at the earliest to receive your machine. It could take longer than that considering that pre-orders have been still coming in for some time for all the resellers while the SB waiting game has been unfolding. -

The models on our site are pre orders so yes they are safe to order. They are no longer shipping because of the Intel recall. No need to worry about getting one that the problem hasnt been taken care of. As Mathis512 said they wont actually be shipping until late March into April.
From what i've seen and hear Optimus will not work with Linux, unless someone has found a work around on this. -
Thanks both of you.
I'm still wondering about the independent GPU button however.
What exactly does it do? -
Seriously? Nobody knows??

Sucks that you can't use just the dedi..
Sounds funny but thats enough for me to not get it.
Need that linux support along with the dedi.
Not that i'm gonna play games on linux but I'd watch 1080p content and im not sure itll be smooth on integrated graphics.
How hard is it to have 3 levels of control through a switch?
Off - Auto/Optimus - On
It's 2011 FFS, innovate! -
If I'm not mistaken it would be impossible to have a dedicated only mode with optimus since with optimus the display is hooked up to the integrated only and not the GPU... integrated has to be powered for your display to work at all... Whether it uses the NVidia card or not depends on the libraries loaded.
1080p content will be smooth anyway on the integrated gpu if you have good drivers, the sandy bridge integrated is not that bad. -
Not sure about the button, but more of a response to the availability on all Sager retailer sites. If you want Xmodel (any model that was recalled) You can order now cause it's first come first serve basis. As far as availability goes this link should shed some light:
