I just received this laptop brand new about 2 weeks ago, and I've noticed a potential bugbear of a problem. I have a Coolermaster SF-19 pad going max at any point of time, and I also have Speedfan always on to monitor system temps.
I was playing Planetside2 for about 45 minutes and I noticed that the GPU restarted with the screen going black and returning back to the game after it hit 80 celcius, with Speedfan indicating that it cooled a bit to 74 before approaching 80 again. I don't know what I'm doing wrong and I wish I could do something about it.

80C is normal, but you mentioned it restarts? I know that 700 series have built in function that keeps the GPU to 80C, but shouldn't restart...

My gpu can hit 93C and keep going. 80C should be no problem. I have the P170SM with 4800 and 780m.
Try hwinfo64 to see if it shows different temps, and what the high is. Maybe it is not the gpu causing it? -

What about the cpu?
-
What are your clocks when playing? Before and after it restarts?
-
contact your supplier for support as thats not normal. as Meaker said it might not be the gpu.
are you overclocking?
also whats you ambient room temperature.
as mentioned try other temp monitors. hwinfo64 / core temps / gpu-z / hw monitor can all be found in my sig below. -

Temps aside, does this only happen during Planetside 2?

True actually reading your description again it could just be a driver issue, the machine is not restarting so there is no thermal issue (that cutting a card out would at the very least force the system to restart).
Sager/Clevo with i7 4800 and a single 780M. GPU keeps on restarting at 80degrees. Help?
