I'm getting pretty close to buying a Sager, and would love to hear:

    1) How Sager owners would compare the display to other notebooks they have owned

    2) Matte vs Gloss, or specifically how much of a problem is reflection on gloss, and how good is contrast on matte.

    Thanks everyone

    1) Displays have generally higher resolution, its sharp and crisp but I can complain about the poor brightness.
    2) My glossy screen is really a pain outside, I can't see anything but indoor, there is no problem. Its obvious that the gloss will have reflexion but its not really noticeable indoor.

And that's for the NP8660. That would help if you said which laptop you want to buy.

    I'm thinking about the NP8660 at 1680 x 1050 or the NP5797 at 1920 x 1200. Those are both glossy screens I think.

If you are running applications that require multiple windows, 1920X1200 is the best choice. Not as important for gaming. I can't see much difference in detail between 1920x1200 and 1680x1050 in games I have run. The 1920x1200 display on my Sager is plenty bright and the glossy screen is good for better color display. I don't use it outdoors so reflections are not an issue.

^^ I love my WUXGA 1920x1200 screen... so much room that I can work with. :)

... probably can never go back to a lower res in my future notebooks. :D

I would only go with 1650 if I decided to go really cheap and get the 15.4" NP8660. That's what I run on my current 15.4" laptop, and I don't think I could handle 1920 on a 15.4". You think the NP5797 with the 9800GTX would run most games well at 1920?

After doing a lot of reading I've started to think that laptop displays are getting ready to take a big leap forward in the next year or so, so it might be a good idea to go a little cheaper on this one and plan to upgrade in within the next two years instead of three or four.

I use my 5793 inside only, and in this environment the 1920x1200 glossy panel is quite honestly the best looking panel I've looked at. The gloss makes the colors pop really well, and everything is very crisp. The screen is bright but not overwhelmingly so.

I have a Macbook Pro with a matte screen, and it's definitely more muted and "dark" to look at for long periods. The same even goes for my 24" LCD I use for my desktop PC.

Can't address #1, but on #2, I'd go with glossy unless you're going to be using the system a lot in a typical office-type space, with a lot of flourescent overhead lights, or else in some other brightly lighted place, such as outdoors, or in a room where the screen will constantly be facing toward a large window that get's a lot of sunlight coming through. In those instances, you'll probably want to consider going matte, although even then you can get transparent covers for the screen that will render it matte temporarily and can be removed when you no longer need the matte surface.
