I just got a new Sager laptop and paid for the upgrade to Win 10 Pro. Sager did not include the certificate from MS with the Win 10 key.

I emailed Sager and they said they do not provide the key and they want to sell me a USB stick for $25.00 to be able to reload Win 10 if I ever need to for some reason.

I paid for for the OS and I can not believe that Sager does not provide the key in case I ever need to reload the OS.

Is this normal when you buy a PC or laptop now that you do not even get the key for the OS in case you ever need to reload the OS?

There are tools you can use to get the key if you so choose, or it may be embedded in the BIOS (not sure if Clevo/Sager do that).

Either way, you don't need the key once the laptop has been activated. If you needed to reinstall Windows and the installer asks you for a key just click "Skip." Then after the installation when you connect to the internet, windows with automatically activate through your device ID.

Per Microsoft the factory installs of Windows 10 do not come with a Key label. This is true on many factory installs of Windows 10 that is done at Dell, HP and other big manufacturers.

The product key is stored in BIOS and is used automatically by the Windows when connected to the Internet for doing reinstalls of Windows on that particular unit, or laptop for it to be activated.

You can find the product key by downloading a utility that will show your Windows key.

If you upgrade the BIOS to a new one does that erase the key?

Thanks to all for all the responses, not getting a key certificate makes sense now.

If your manufacturer uses SLP Keys in Bios there is basically no point in knowing what your SLP Key is as you won't be able to use that copy of windows on another PC
And if you try to reinstall Win 10 anniversary edition it will be able to read your SLP key so that no manual entry will be needed anyways

IMO knowing your SLP key is only usefull if you want to downgrade to a retail version of 7 or something and even then you will need a hell of a lot more than just the SLP key

It's true that once the copy has been activated, you can re-activate a fresh install simply by connecting to the internet. Microsoft's server should validate authenticity on the fly.

I thought, though, that all OEMs providing SLP keys were required, by contract, to provide a COA still. Maybe that's changed(?).

To extract the Windows Key if it was injected in your UEFI BIOS:

To find out your Windows 10 Product key so you can use it to activate Windows:

Download RWEverything and launch it as admin

Click on ACCESS > ACPI Tables

Then go to the MSDM Tab:

Sorry about that he confusion of the key system in place but as mentioned it's not required as your BIOS has it built in.
