    Hey Guys,

I'm new to Sager and just ordered a 5170 from Xotic. With Dells I typically reformat the HD to get rid of all the bloatware. So my question is do these systems normally ship with just the drivers disks, and Windows, then you install them? Or do they typically come preconfigured if you purchase the OS with the system?

    Thanks,

    Derek

If you opt for a no OS option when ordering, only the driver disks are included with nothing installed on the drive.

If you opt for Windows, then I would most likely think that they install it for you. Without bloatware. I think you also can ask if you can install the Windows yourself, rather than they installing it for you.

I can attest to this. This is one of the strongest selling points besides quality on the Sager notebooks.

If you purchase Windows with the laptop then yes.

If you didn't purchase then no.

    Makes sense :)

Microsoft lets you activate windows an infinite number of times if you claim you've never used it on their phone system :p

I think most microsoft licenses are actually for 1 PC and 1 laptop anyways (the home and small business ones at least).

If you order a copy of windows with your laptop these are OEM licenses, so they will be tied to the original laptop hardware.

Resellers correct me if I am wrong.

You are thinking about office, windows is supposed to be a one shot deal, at least the OEM copies.

    Nope your right. =)

I think the educational licenses are 2-3 use though so if you have one of those :)

Yeah, the Educational Licenses can be used on multiple computers, last I knew it was 3 computers, but you also can only buy one a year, or at least from my University you could.

Yeah but I have one address from college, one from my law school's university and a third from the law school itself (edu addresses). Then I have my wife's law school address so thats more than enough educational licenses for me.

If I buy a laptop sans a hard drive and do a direct install of my old hard drive (from my old laptop) into this new one, will everything run as is? (albeit faster) I have an educational license Windows 7 Pro.

In theory it should work. Thats a HUGE theory and it probably would never be stable, nor is it ever recommended to do something like that. If your moving from a whole different hardware setup the suggestion is to do a clean install.

No, it probably won't. In theory, it should. But Microsoft has Windows set up to notice this kind of thing and you'll have your copy invalidated when it senses such a huge hardware change (mostly due to the change in motherboard).

You may get lucky, but I wouldn't count on it. Windows tends to tie itself to the motherboard, so you'd have to reinstall if there were drastic hardware changes.
