For about $2,000, which is going to be better? The Sager is cheaper, so for $2,000 it will have more upgrades, but is there something about the ThinkPad that makes it better regardless?

You can get a T61p for far less than $2000. Also you can get discount coupons for the Thinkpads on various sites like slickdeals and fatwallet. thinkpads are generally known to have very solid quality and design. One of the best (if not the best) keyboards. You can also get them cheap by checking out their outlet store on their site where they have unopened/canceled laptops.

yes but i would upgrade both to the point that they cost $2,000, so given that, are there any benefits to one or the other?

Thinkpads generally have a lot more of those random macro buttons that do things, such as the ThinkVantage center, etc. A few of my friends in college who have Thinkpads hate it and all the icons that come with it (the taskbars on those are huge because of redundant IBM icons). Specs aside, the UI is only for certain people, keep that in mind.

Also the Sagers come with practically no bloatware, though in the case of a Thinkpad what bloatware you do get might be useful compared to other companies...

The ThinkPad is better in terms of build quality, while the Sager can really be customized and have a decent price at the same time. I'd still pick the ThinkPad though.

Sagers usually come with just a plain install of XP/Vista on them, no other software at all (unless you bought it with Office or something). Personally, this is what I would prefer, simply because I can go about installing stuff on the machine and make it more personal faster.

You can easily do a clean Windows install on the Thinkpad too. :)

I have no issues what so ever with the build quality of my sager. I have seen/felt/used a T61, so I feel I can make a small comparison. I got the sager because it looks nice enough to use in the office, portable to take into class, and then still get good fps at night :) Umm idk but isn't the GPU in the T61 a business model?

I would go with the Sager IF the GPU is upgradeable, otherwise I would definitely choose the T-61p. The GPU in the T-61p is Nvidia 570m which is basically an 8600m GT 128 bit DDR3 (256MB). 3Dmark 06 scores are in the 4K range. Lenovo's regular customer service sucks but their tech support (which is US based btw) is pretty good.

lol at firestarter. (props to goke for being a dick! haha)

anyway. sager. have both, prefer the sager. simple, powerful, sleek, gets the job done. thinkpad always seems like it's trying too hard and pleads with me to use it's business functions (even when i dont want to). my only moral option is to use the sager it seems nowadays...
