I'm in the process of specing out a new machine to do mostly software engineering and development and the 5796 is currently at the top of my list. I have read some postings here about the keyboard missing keystrokes and loud fan noise. What I'm looking for is some feedback on those issues from current users. I don't want to fork over $3000 and be disappointed and missing keystrokes while typing code or documentation would really **** me off. A distant 2nd contender is the hp dv7 and I know that they have their own issues, but at under $2000 I can better rationalize those away plus I know I have 21 days in which I can return it to hp no questions asked (but I so love the specs on the 5796 and the high res screen). How is xoticpc.com's return policy for a machine that you may not be happy with. Thanks for any responses.

--and yes, I will do a touch of gaming on it, I'm not an adult all the time ;)

Do you do contracting or work direct? If your gonna be traveling, the weight alone might be a problem, if your not, the fan noise will bother you in a office environment. I would go with a 9262 model, if the weigh doesn't matter. I've owned two 5973's and I wouldn't go back. It's just so much quieter.

The keyboard thing is most postively related to the os as the people who had problems with it were using xp. People who had vista had no problems. And again fan noise is someting relative to each person. To me on idle its really not a problem i mean when i can bring it in the library and be able to use it for about 1 hour without any disruptions then im sure it will be fine in an office where ther eis background noise.

And I’m sure he’s not going in an office or library with the thing overclocked and set to high performance. Mine makes little to no noise when fans are on low, and when it does go above it’s not that bad. Now if they were above low most of the time, I would have a problem with that. As you said…noise is relative to the user.
