I recently installed Win 10, yet the mic still doesn't work. It hasn't worked on Win 7 for a long time, so I figured when I upgraded to 10, at least the mic would start working again. I don't know if it is a hardware problem or s/w. The driver is currently NVIDIA High Definition Audio

That's your hdmi audio driver. What input devices are shown?
-
Microphone (HD audio device)
Line In (HD audio device)
Microphone (HD Audio Device).
when I test the mic, it fails to hear anything. -
now I see that in Skype, no camera is detected. prolly is the same issue as the lack of mic? I've no idea what driver I need.

Windows 10 native drivers should run it. Is the camera enabled with the keyboard shortcut? Mic should be separate and could have an issue.
-
I just tried Fn-F10. didn't do a thing. skype still reports no camera.

Might be worth cechlimg out the module in the display assembly then and the motherboard connector too.

i think win 10 installed the wrong driver. I used to have realtek drivers but am having a hard time finding the correct one online to install. any help?
-
Windows 10 Camera app works with the Bison webcam installed in the Sager. But no sound when I do a test recording. So now I know the camera itself works.

what is the max memory I can install in the np8130? I used to have a guide to upgrading the laptop but cant find it and can't find anything at Sager but the User Guide which doesn't mention upgrading hardware items.

8gb in each slot.
-
i think i saw a spec sheet that says it has 4 slots (2 ea, 2 banks) so i can order 32gb, right? or not? The Crucial website states that the np8130 takes a max of just 16 gb.

Check the manual for the slots or cpu-z. That's what it launched with as 8gb modules were not around (it was a long time ago).

found this on page 35 of the concise user manual:
Memory expandable up to 16GB
Compatible with 2GB or 4GB Modules
I don't know if that means the the slots won't accept 8GB modules, or not. -
Back to my original problem. Why does win 10 have nvidia audio drivers installed instead of realtek? I downloaded a cab file with realtek drivers, extracted the cab files, but can't figure out how to install the realtek driver. I can't do an "update drivers" method because the drivers are currently nvidia. I haven't deleted the 4 nvidia drivers, because I currently see no way for device manager to get to the realtek installer, in the list of files extracted from the cab file.

Max memory for the memory controller is 16GB, so 4x4GB.dave1812 likes this. -

Yep, that's the official spec. 8GB modules did not really exist at launch but 8GB modules work.
-
I'll see if I can return modules if they don't work, as I don't want to bother with just going from 8 to 16. But going to 32 would be a nice upgrade.

Really it depends how much you need/use. I have 16GB and it's plenty for me. Maybe just get 2x8GB now.
-
I plugged in an external mic to the 1/8" jack. That took care of the problem and I guess that means there is a wiring issue inside the Sager. I won't pursue it further.

At some point you could pull the bezel and track thr module/cable for it.
