Just got my hands on my new NP2090 and pretty impressed with the quality/screen. No dead pixels that I can tell (of course I probably can't having never seen one) and shiny black.![]()
Anyway, I'll be sure to browse through some of the stickies later for Vista and whatnot, but a quick question.
The shiny black top of the lappy, with Sager imprinted, is great, but I've owned an iPod and a WD black external and boy do they get scratched up/dusty/fingerprinty quick. Anyone know of a good cover/tape on thingie that I can put on it? I've tossed my Mom's E1505 with the silver paint around pretty haphazardly and it still looks nice in my eyes, but I get the feeling it's going to be tougher with a shiny black exterior.
Man, I can't believe I had to wait a whole extra week to get home for it.

congrads ... what kind of screen did you get?? im not to thrilled with my 5791 screen at this point..
-
Another question: the whole right side of the screen is somewhat noticeably darker than the the rest of the screen. Is this "backlight bleeding"? Will any software fix this or is it an LCD issue?
Thanks. -
It seems like it might be uneven backlight distribution. Can you take a high-quality picture of the screen displaying black in a dark room? That's often the best way to tell if you genuinely have light leakage.
Check out this picture for IFL-90 WSXGA+ screen comparison:
-
Figures it's Vista being retarded. The "sidebar" fades into black on the side, which makes the whole thing darker as it goes off screen.
Stupid Vista.
Love the screen so far. Extremely clear, very vibrant, somewhat "greasy" I guess, but I'm used to it after using my E1505 with "Truebrite" or whatever it is. It's definitely not glossy, but I love the no reflections and it looks great.
Why am I still typing on the E1505..........
(well, cuz the internet's set up for it, but....)
-
I guess that makes my previous post obsolete.
From reviews and personal experience, the WSXGA+ matte IFL-90 screen is vibrant in color and backlight distribution is excellent compared to other vendors, such as the Chimei "grainy" WSXGA+ screens Dell 1520s have had issues with. Truly, it really is an excellent screen. -
Hey, Syntax, since you obviously own a 2090, what do you do about the shiny black exterior? It's already got fingerprints and I really don't want a fat scratch down it... -
I would've preferred a matte finish, much like the Thinkpads, but that's just my minimalistic computer style more than anything. I do find that it is a fingerprint magnet, and I find myself polishing it from time to time.
-
use a soft microfiber towel to clean it. you can use some fine wax or some fine swirl remover for a auto finish if you have any fine swirls after time they work great on plastic, you are lucky to have got the matte screen i wish i would have waited for that on my 5791 now. i am shocked i got a lg screen and am not really at all happy with it.. to dim, the bottom corners are very dark and it does have a small amount of grain to it.. but i got the glossy finish .. be glad you ot the matte one wish i did
-
Yeah, matte for both would be perfect.
So you don't use a skin or anything? Do you have a separate laptop bag? I've got a Swiss backpack that's fairly nice, but I'm not 100% confident about the finish not getting beat up.
Any recommendations would be great. -
i am pretty ocd with my systems my wife's glossy toshiba lid i keep a thin microfiber towel in her bag for it and just wrap it over the lid before sliding it in her bag.. has yet to show any scratches in around 8 months
-
Cool, sounds like a good solution.
Anywhere conveinent to pick up a towel and any particular brand to look for? -
i just got one from wal mart in the auto section. they have a few different sizes. as long as its a fine microfiber it will be fine..
-
i'm thinking about getting this notebook sleeve: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16834990021
mainly to carry around as well as cushion when i have it in my backpack. -
Been messing around with a few of the simpler things (god I'm going to waste so much time messing with this laptop when I should be doing homework). Still love the screen...
The touchpad and buttons seem kind of flimsy to mine. The left button kind of makes a "bouncy" sound when clicked and the touchpad seems awfully sensitive. Plus I haven't figured out why it keeps auto-clicking and whatnot. Guess I'll do some searching for drivers and whatnot, though I ultimately plan to use a real mouse of some sort 90% of the time. Perhaps I'm just used to my Dell touchpad/buttons, but the Dell's buttons are definitely nicer.
I don't particularly dislike Vista, but it's very complicated coming over from XP and I now understand the whole Vista needs 5 layers of approval before doing anything. I dunno, time will tell.
The newegg slip looks nice, but I think I just might buy a "skin" to slap on the exterior just to make myself feel better. All that sliding in and out of my backpack... Dunno if slip + laptop will fit, especially since my 6 cell didn't come yet...
But yeah, great laptop! -

Would that work with the exterior of the laptop as well as the LCD, i.e. the glossy black finish on top you see when you close the laptop?
Might order 2 and slap them on. Looks pretty cool -
.........nevermind
-
My lid has been scratched a lot after having it for about 2 months. They're fine scratches that can only been seen at certain angles. I suspect they are from sliding the laptop into my bag.

Lazy did you go Matte or glossy? Hows the batterylife for you? Im debating wether to pick one of these up or build one through a barebone.
-
Been a bit busy picking up a TV for our dorm and messing with this laptop. Ugh, my reading for classes is going to take a hit...
Runeknight, I initially ordered the 1280x800, but just before it was going to ship, I decided to fork over the $90 for the WSXGA 1680 x 1050. Definitely worth it. Though everything's miniscule and I don't exactly have 20/20 vision, it's very clear and the couple games I've loaded up are very nice so far. The viewing angles are pretty nice but I don't really look at my screen from 45 degrees off center very often; the screen is a tiny bit "greasy" so to speak, but that's what you get with matte. Otherwise, no dead pixels, beautiful screen = happy. My roommate's got a 1280x800 Qosmio across the room and the difference is noticeable.
Striker, yeah I'm definitely going to get something to slap on the top to keep it nice as long as possible. I'm sure just a basic vinyl skin would work, but I'm willing to do some searching.
Anyway, I've only been on this thing for max 2 hours so initial negatives:
The keyboard and touchpad/buttons are not going to blow you away. There's the issue with the switched FN/Cntrl buttons, the touchpad appears flimsy, and the arrow keys are tiny. I keep hitting Shift, End, and Cntrl.
The glossy top is fingerprinty and I'm assuming scratch-prone. Looks great, but I don't really stare at the lid of my lappy too often and would have preferred a longer-lasting matte finish like my Mom's Dell.
Very quiet, but the HDD seems fidgety after doing some stuff; I'll have to do some tweaking software wise I guess. I also don't particularly like the beeping DVD drive and the revving was alarming, but I guess not strange. I keep thinking something's wrong when it beeps.
I'd like to invest some serious time into this thing, but school's picking up, so I guess I'll have to wait for weekends. Anyway, would highly recommend this laptop to anyone. -
All right, another hour or two in and everything's great so far. Increased the DPI, wow, everything looks perfect now; also increased text size in FF, only some of the text is larger. Still very clear and beautiful contrast.
HDD was fidgeting because I had Windows Update working in the background. 35 updates down and still running sweet. Now it's silent, no flickering. It's a 7200 100GB Hitachi; doesn't seem very hot (haven't put it on my lap yet) and runs pretty quiet except for heavy activity.
I dunno, my only issues as of now are the keyboard and touchpad which could be of better quality, beeping DVD drive, and getting used to Vista. Everything else is perfect in every sense of the word.
Anyway, any other recommendations for threads I should check out for Vista/NP2090s, what utilities to use (HD-Tune, CPU-Z), optimizing the Turbo Memory, and other advice would be great.
Just wow so far... -
Congrats on the acquisition of a new laptop!
-
Yes is will scratch very easily, at least mine did with just the mouse sitting on top. I'm looking at some skins from Skinit.com, they seem to have a decent selection. Has anyone used these from Skinit?
-
Quick question.
Anyone have schematic of the 2090 handy? What's inside the left side of the notebook?
I think the fan in there keeps revving, like on a little then off. It's not bad, but it's a little more annoying than always on or always off. Anyone else notice this? Is there a utility to look at/adjust fan activity or can I do that through the BIOS?
Might pick up a Zalman cooler and see what if that helps. -
Try Notebook Hardware Control software, see if it can adjust it for you.

And you can also take a look at my post for fan-less cooler in this thread.

Hmm, cool, will definitely take a look.
Lol, that fanless notebook cooler doesn't come out for 2 more months? That's harsh...
Now I have to decide whether to wait for that; I dunno about the cooling, but if it works, it'd be a great slip for the scratch-prone cover; or go with a Zalman.
Decisions, decisions...
