I told my friend about this site a couple days ago, so for the past few days he's been browsing here looking for some info to help him decide which notebook he wants. And unlike myself, he's already found what could be the notebook for him, the NP2092. One problem though, he wants a matte screen. What happened to that option on the 2092?

you could email or call one of the resellers and see if they can get matte, but i'm sure even if they try, there will be a premium. but even then i wouldn't count on it.

Maybe he works in an open environment or with plenty of light sources around.

You can get a shield that helps with the glare or a screen protector ,worst case scenario.
Glossy screens have better image quality and more brightness.
    There are exceptions though...
