Hey guys, I'm still deciding between these two laptops (price has become a major factor, especially our Canadian dollar in rapid decline). Just wondering what the noise is like for these laptops for non-gaming use, such as web-browsing and Word. Would I be able to use either one in a public library? Does it depend on what hardware I get?

    Thanks, you guys are awesome.

The noise on the NP8660 is noticeable when it is not in silent mode. You can hear the fan working but the noise is not really high pitch so its not annoying. In a public library or in class, people won't hear the laptop working except if they are beside you but they will hear you typing for sure, not loud but you can notice the keyboard sound.

But on silent mode it's good? Is the keyboard as loud as say, a desktop keyboard? Or is it just louder than usual for a laptop?

On silent mode, you'll only hear the hard drive *quietly* working and maybe the normal noise of a computer but the fan is dead silent. Overall, you can't hear it. As for typing, the keyboard is after all a laptop keyboard so its more quiet than a desktop keyboard or those old IBM keyboards but its make some noise, especially big keys like spacebar or backspace, except if you push every key gentilly down :) Its more than acceptable overall, just that it can break the silence of a classroom, especially if you're the only one using a laptop :p

Ok, thanks. There are others who use their laptops to take notes and stuff too and do work in the library. So it should be alright.

Oh, I guess I should ask, could there be any problems with overheating in silent mode? I mean with normal tasks.

No problems with overheating in silent mode. The fan will actually kick in even in silent mode if it feels its getting too hot (i played UT3 once and left silent mode on by accident and my gpu was still only 78 degrees!)

I permanently leave my 860TU on silent mode all the time cause the fan is loud on normal mode. I really have no idea why it has to work that hard when all im doing is surfing the internet...it just stays on ALL the time. Probably would have returned the laptop if it wasn't for silent mode *_*

Silent mode is completely silent, and runs very cool. It's perfect for ALL non gaming needs, even playing videos. I have it on silent a whole lot. I wouldn't really use it for gaming, as some games lag (well at 1680x1050) obviously and I dont want to stress the system anyways, but silent mode's way nice.

Yeah, I forgot turn off silent mode also when playing Crysis. Fan kicked in by itself after like 10 minutes...
