Does the sound card in the Sager NP5790 support 5.1? All I can find about it is what is listed here.

    8 Channel Output w/o External Decoder - 4 Multi-function Audio Ports

Well I thought 8 Channel Output meant 7.1 sound, but I'm not 100% sure.

    8CH is 7.1 sound (analog)
6CH is 5.1 sound (analog and digital SPDIF)

So would this be a good thing or bad thing...? I'm not sure what Gophn means about analog/digital SPDIF.

Digital or SPDIF is better quality but is limited to 5.1 surround, which doesn't give quite as convincing a surround effect as 7.1 surround does. Still, movies are encoded at 5.1, so only games take advantage of 7.1 anyway.

SO does this mean that you can hook up a set of 7.1 external speakers directly into the NP5790 and benefit from surround sound?

And to further upgrade sound you can buy a x-fi card or something and enhance actual sound quality, but the # of chanels will stay the same with 7.1 right?

Actually, I would like to know how the sound hookup works too. But you could definitely add an express-card X-Fi card if you found yourself needing one for EAX or recording ability. It won't go higher than 7.1 though. AFAIK, nothing does... yet.
