I am planning on pulling the trigger on this purchase on Monday. However, there are 2 areas (WSXGA vs WUXGA and 5400rpm vs 7200rpm HD) that I am reading conflicting info about. There have been lots of threads on this topic, however can you owners out there give me some advise and explanation on what path I should take. The games I play are both RTS and FPS. (ie. Company of Heros, World in Conflict, Supreme Commander, Call of Duty 4, etc.)
The choices are:
Display
1. 17" WSXGA+ "Glare Type" Super Clear Ultra Bright Glossy Screen (1680x1050)
2. 17" WUXGA "Glare Type" Super Clear Ultra Bright Glossy Screen (1920x1200)
Hard Drive
1. 320GB 5400RPM (Serial-ATA II 300 - 8MB Cache)
2. 200GB 7200RPM (Serial-ATA II 300 - 16MB Cache)
If there have been some previous threads that really discuss this topic, please link to them, in the event I did not read it. (I highly doubt it though, as I am exhausted from all the reading).
Thanks guys in advance for your replies. Looking forward to joining the Sager Owners Club!!

Personally I have the 1920x1200 screen and the 200GB 7200rpm hdd (as you can see from my sig) and I love this machine. It eats all the games I throw at it (including supcom dual screen with a 19" 1280x1024)
The hdd does run a bit hot (got to 66 during heavy access today - have ordered an nc2000 to help with that). I would expect the 320gb 5400rpm drive to be cooler as it has a slower rotational speed and it's access speeds are similar (sometimes better) due to the higher data density on the platters so I'd go for that one if I were you - oh and it's also bigger -
Easy call there Jrex..
WUXGA (You won't be sorry! Especially if you go with the BluRay) and assuming you don't use an external HD, go with the 320GB 5400. I personally went 200GB 7200 because I also use a 500 gig external for my graphics, BlackBerry theme images and .jad/.alx files as well as all my huge Photography images. -
def get the 320gb they are just as fast if not faster in tests then the 200gb due to the higher density. and the display is a tough call imo i personally would get the wsxga this time around. but the wuxga is nice for high def and video
-
as all the previous post said the WUXGA is great for videos and gaming, but it's kinda difficult for me to read when I am using MS office or even web browsing.
-
Thank guys for the responses thus far.
Yes, the display is a tough call. For those of you that have WUXGA, when you select the display option of 1680 x 1050 or 1600 x 1200, do you notice it blurrer compared to the native resolution of 1920 x 1200 in games?
I have been reading if you go the WSXGA route you may be able to still handle future games down the road a bit longer. However, having said this if I go the 1920 x 1200 route now and down the road when games get more resource intensive can't I just choose 1680 x 1050 to smoothin out the game? -
sure you can just step down in res...its just not as clear when you do that imo

If the 320 GB HD was available when I got my 5793 I probably would have gone for it, but when it comes to the screen that is a tricky issue. I went for the WU for a few reasons: if a dead pixel occurs it is nearly impossible to notice it, I heard that the WU was a bit brighter than the WS, and I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that a year or so down the road I will be able to throw a 9x series GPU in my notebook, but i don't count on it. As far as running games in non-native res, I don't notice a difference in clarity, but it might just be my minor astigmatism preventing me from noticing a difference. Raising the dpi in windows and increasing font size in Firefox has eliminated 99% of hard to read text so I don't have a problem there, but what does get me sometimes is web-based video; I have two choices: freakin' small or full-screen blurry. But other than that, I am very satisfied with my choice- it is one darn beautiful screen with virtually no light leakage.
@theriko: I dunno what you were doing but my HD has never gone over 61, remember you can always set the fans to full blast to subdue HD heat -
@OP, if I can choose again I would go for 1680x1050.
I will take 2 pictures for you tomorrow, one for 1920x1200, one for downscale 1680x1050 -
Display
1. 17" WSXGA+ "Glare Type" Super Clear Ultra Bright Glossy Screen (1680x1050)
2. 17" WUXGA "Glare Type" Super Clear Ultra Bright Glossy Screen (1920x1200)
Hard Drive
1. 320GB 5400RPM (Serial-ATA II 300 - 8MB Cache)
2. 200GB 7200RPM (Serial-ATA II 300 - 16MB Cache)
Easy call! Go, go, go!
^^ sorry, been playing a lil' CS
Get WUXGA... I went from a really low res desktop monitor.... and it took me a day to adjust but I CANNOT go back....
And both hard disk are tested to perform at same speed in real world performance, the 320GB is larger and actually cheaper. Go for it! -
The WUXGA screen is the best choice, since you get more space for everything you need.I think I`ll make a guide about this pretty soon, since it`s a very common question. Also,if it`s too much , you can increase the DPI and wham, all fixed.
About the 320GB 5400rpm HDD, it`s been proven numerous times it's on par if not a tad better than the 200GB 7200rpm hdd one...And you get 60%more disk space at the same performance! -
Fellas,
Thank-you for the replies. I think I am sold on the 320GB 5400 HDD issue, but is the display one a difficult one.
Do you guys know of any benchmarks done on the same game, settings and computer cpu, with the only diffence to be native res WSXGA vs. WUXGA? There has been some conversations about WSXGA being able last a bit longer before an upgrade to keep up with games in the future. What are your guys thoughts about this.
Also, are there any previous threads out there with good screenshots of RTS in both Sager WSXGA and WUXGA LCD's. I would love to see COH - Opposing Fronts or Supreme Commander in WSXGA / WUXGA with everything maxed out!!
nirvana0001 - Looking forward to your screens when you have time. -
Difference won`t be that huge. It depens mostly on the games. But about a 10-15% is to be expected.
-
@JREX, i tried an hour to get the pictures but they just won't tell the difference. damn!
-
You're gonna go for WUXGA and 320GB... you know it, so stop waiting and thinking already !!
-
I would say go for the WUXGA screen, I just love that high res
For HD, defently go for the 320 GB one, its just as fast as the 200gb 7200 rpm one, runs cooler (the HD department of this lappy could be better, it tends to run just a tad to hot for my taste), got more space, tho the access time is better on the 200 gb one, but not by miles. If I were out getting one now, it would def be the 320 gb one -
Heres the benchmarks done at different resolutions by chaz: http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsId=4236 For those undecided about what resolution to choose...

Thank-you for all the responses, after lots of research and reading I finally pulled the tigger on this system fom Xotic.. Went with WUXGA, figured you can't go wrong, even down the road when more demanding future games come out you can just lower the graphic detail, but still get the sharpness of the higher res.

Already looking into that new 320 gb hitachi drive
Lower powerconsumption is nice !! Specially when my seagate runs as hot as it does
-
What lower power consumption ? 1.8W is what it says, while other drives take 500mW-1W ...
