Hi, I have an old (2-3 years old) Sager NP5793 running an 8800M. I came back from class one day and my screen was all black-- the computer had been running a screen saver and seemed very hot to the touch (I assume I had accidentally turned the fans off and the screen saver taxed my GPU too much). Since then, my screen has remained black when I start up-- the backlight appears to be on (I can use FN + keys to change the brightness), but there's no actual video. I've hooked my computer up to external monitors but it hasn't worked. I took my laptop to a shop and the guy cleaned everything out and applied some thermal paste, and my laptop started working again, but only in safe mode. It could start windows in safe mode but there would be red vertical lines on my screen-- if I tried to start not in safe mode, it would get to the windows loading screen and go black. I didn't use the laptop for a good few months, and now when I start up it's back to being all black again-- I can get windows to start (I hear the start up noises) but still no video.
Is my problem without a doubt my graphics card, or could it be the screen/a driver problem? If it IS my graphics card, is it plausible to find a replacement card somewhere online? Thanks in advance for any help.

I obviously can't say for certain, but it sounds like your graphics card did indeed kick the bucket. The fact that your machine seemed hot to the touch also fits with that- because under high heat, the 8xxx series would basically self-destruct themselves by solder points coming undone. There are people out there that have had luck baking their 8xxx series cards (in a real oven), but it's not recommended and it may not even work.
You can try the NBR marketplace to see if someone is currently selling an 8 series card:
