Hi guys, basically i've had my Sager NP5793 for 2 and a half years now. Just a few days ago while playing starcraft II my video card failed, my whole laptop crashed and when i restarted, i had these wierd red lines across my screen (which are still there now). My GPU wasn't being recognised by the device manager, HW Monitor wasn't picking it up, i think my GPU is completely fried because over the last couple few months my GPU temps were reaching 90 Celsius and i had to put the fan on max (Fn+1) to keep it lower and even then it was around 80.

So my 8800M GTX is dead, i was wondering is it possible to replace my graphics card with a newer one, and which ones are compatible with the Sager NP5793. Also any suggestions as to how this could have been avoided? Im thinking it was a heatsink problem?

Thanks a lot for your help, and sorry about the noobish questions, im quite inexperienced when it comes to building/repairing rigs

As soon as you found out there is heat problem, you should clean the dust in the laptop and/or redo the thermalpaste first.

Not really the best try MX-3 paste it works better and no curing time. AS5 have curing time of 200 for it to seat* in nicely. ;)

the officially supported VGA cards for your machine are ONLY :

    GeoForce : 7950M GTX, 8700M GT, 8800M GTX, 9800M GT and 9800M GTS
    Quadro : FX 1600M and FX 2700M

    My advice :
Try to find a VGA card that was originally for Clevo M570RU (the same model name of NP5793 but in Clevo language).
If couldn’t find, then try to find one that was originally for Clevo D900C
If couldn't find then find any Clevo with MXM 2.1
Don't use any other branded card (HP, lenovo, IBM, ....)

This is why I like thermal paste in general: no matter what paste one picks, it will do the job. Fractional and lower digit results are insignificant. As long as the paste is properly applied, any paste is a winner.

pkhetan is a clevo fanboi. Many HP cards will fit and work 100%.

Just dont pay over 200$ please? its NOT worth it trust me.

In regards to a newer card (the 9800m gt and 8800m gtx are actually the same), you may be able to get a gtx 260m to work. These cards wont be so defective as all the 9000 and 8000 series. But if you describe yourself as noobish, you probably dont want to get into it.
