So, I got my new NP5793 in the mail yesterday and was really excited when I opened it up. That was until I turned it on...

The screen brightness at max, is easily less than 1/2 of what the brightness on my previous two computers were.

Is this just what I can expect from the screen? Is it a problem with Vista? Is there anything I can do to fix the problem?

I need to figured this out quickly or I need to send the computer back before my 30 return is guaranteed.

It's frustrating because everything I read about the 5793 was about how clear and bright the screen was...

    Any help is appreciated.

God, tat's why... more and more people are complaining about the lousy screen brightness Sager is offering.

The weird thing is, there are still some folks out there that appraise and felt very satisfied about the colours, contrast and the brightness of the screen.

Good CPU, good graphics cards, powerful system, top-notch build quality but really lousy screen.. dammit

I've tried all three plans (Balances, power-saver, and high-performance) and it doesn't change anything. Still really dim.

It's a bit strange because I play World of Warcraft, and the grapics on that seem to be pretty good.

But, in Windows or any regular application, it's super dim.

actually i really like this system for its price and specs... but seems like more and more people are complaining about the screen..

I wonder why there are still people saying it is a good and bright screen.

When you see "those" people next time, ask them what kind of laptop they previously had. Probably some low end crap or none. I have 14 laptops at home, including the high-ends like MBPs, the T43P (flexview) and low-ends like $349 Dell. So when I say the screen is dim compare to others, you better trust me.

    Next time read harder.........

Yes. Thank you so much for that wonderful advice. I did a lot of research before buying. Almost every review stated how clear and bright the screen was.

cotolay, the monitor ID is LPLF700 from LGPhillipsLCD

I had the same problem before. Try to adjust your color profile in the nvidia control panel and see if that helps.

First thing I would do, if you can't solve the problem, from these boards or yourself is call whom-ever you purchased your 5793 from and ask for support..................you did pay for that !

As far as nay-sayers here who say they've owned 5000 notebooks and knows everything about everything, it all boils down to what you are happy with !

I've owned both glossy and matte, 3 notebooks all together, and all I can say is my 5793, matte finish, looks good to me !
My other 2 notebooks, glossy screens, were a fingerprint magnet that showed every spec of dust that was remotely near it !

I called both my sales person and the Sager technical support. The technical support ran me thru a few things to try and fix the problem (thru bios etc). I've tried to adjust the colors as much as I could, but to no avail.

I've owned both glossy and matte screens before, but this one is just too dark for my tastes.

Overall, I'm just not happy with it. So, I've decided that I'm going to send it back. It's unfortunate because everything else about the computer seems really good. But, I guess from here on, I'm going to be going glossy screens...

Well there are few other minors IMO.

    1) Speakers are weak, yup any $349 Dell can beat it.
    2) Most major ports are on the right now, which is very inconvenience for right handed user.
    3) Fans are loud even system at idle. None of the M1730, 9262, M15x, Gateway FX with similar/higher specs are like this.
    4) Headphone jack is crappy, you will find out in few months.

Well, I've basically decided that I'm going to send the computer back, so those problems won't be a problem for me.

Now I have to decide what I want to get instead. I'm leading towards the Alienware m15x. Yes. I know. There are "problems" with that one too. But, the more I read, the more it seems like there are problems with everything...

So...why exactly is the headphone jack crappy? Will it pop and click, does it give a ringing tone, does it break and not work in a few months?

Also, would you recommend something like the 8662 in its place, or have you considered other laptops that might be superior at around the same price? Inquiring minds want to know. :)

It will likely break in a few months. It seems to be poorly soldered to the motherboard so if you jar it at all, it will break.

    Mine did...

My 5793 headphone jack works fine at 14 months and the matte LCD screen is acceptably bright with no problems and has a code ID of APP9C50.

While I am very satisfied with my purchase, I am sorry that yours did not live up to expectations. Perhaps you could get them to put on a different LCD monitor if they have one in stock.

Maybe that's because you aren't using it that much because of the X-Fi sound card.

No, I use it at night when I don't want to disturb my wife. The X-Fi sound card has an adapter from Creative Labs and is hooked up to speakers (no headphone jack) as as a rule I prefer separate speakers over on board ones.

Edit- One possible reason mine has lasted is that I leave the headphones plugged in all the time so perhaps that does not place as much stress on the connection as one would if the headphones were always being put in and then removed all the time. Just a thought.

    Mike

P.S. I'm also using build 7077 but every time I try to update the profile it seems to take the edit after I save it but then nothing changes after I leave the User CP. Strange.

The X-Fi xtreme audio notebook does have a headphone jack, and it's better quality than the onboard sound card. The jack is next to the speaker docking module port (in front of it).
