I'm looking to get a 17" notebook for my dad and I was interested in the 5793 given the recent drop in price. Even with the "massive" sale, it's still pretty expensive. Compare it to the new Gateway p-7805u, they're roughly the same specs (Gateway actually has better processors and a better hard drive) but the Gateway is nearly $500 cheaper.

    Gateway P- 7805u for $1049

    Sager NP5793:

    - 17" WUXGA "Matte Type" Super Clear Ultra Bright Screen (1920x1200)

Yes, the resolution is higher on the NP5793 and the quality and build is surely better but it's a $500 difference. What are you paying the premium for with the NP5793?

Sometimes you do, in fact, find a better deal on a national brand, just not that often. If you've got one, though, take it. :D

The resolution is actually the same, the 7805u is incorrectly marked as WXGA but is actually WUXGA, there is a big thread about it in the Gateway section.

Ah even better. So the Gateway is better all around with the exception of build quality, which is incredibly important to me...but not worth $500.

And sometimes price is based on supply-demand relationship. Sager could lower their laptops' price but there are still many people willing to pay higher for these machines. That's how businesses make more money from higher margin. When demand for these items is low, businesses could reduce price or stop selling them.

They are both dated tech. The Sager is a definitely higher quality build than the Gateway. Whether the Sager is $400 or $500 better is up to you.

I played with the p-7805u at Best Buy today. Downloaded 3dmark06 and HWmonitor at the store LOL...with everything stock at 176.xx Nvidia drivers it came up with 8709 I think and the GPU temperature never went above 69C. Not bad at all.

I'd love to buy the 5793 but I think it's a little ridiculous that a barely known company like Sager charges you significantly more for practically the same thing than big name brands like Gateway. Build quality alone isn't worth $500.

    HOW DARE YEEEEE!!!! lol

Sager's are beasts!! The NP5793 is along the lines of a Ferrari 612 Scaglietti. Light yet powerful!!! Still a gaming laptop at heart thought.

If you really want to get crazy though. The Sager 9262 is a Zonda F Roadster. Fast yet there is no reason for anyone to buy it.

If the gateway has better specs and is $400 cheaper I don't know why you are making this question.

The diff may be mainly in the chassis or the LCD quality, you have seen the Gateway so make your pick.

Ferraris and Zondas have been known to look good. I can't see the Sager np5793 or the np9262 winning any awards in the design category.
And how is a np5793 light?

Also, hasn't everyone forgotten about a certain Blu-ray drive on the Sager?
And Gateway have already filed bankruptcy, and were then bought by Acer.

At this point, you're more likely to be seeing extreme price-cutting by the national brands in an effort to simply move backlogged inventory, which would make it appear as if the Sager were more expensive than the Gateway.

As for the more general proposition that the price scale should be relative to the degree of national name recognition, ever heard of Ascari Cars Ltd? Neither had I until I tried a google on exotic supercars. They charge quite a hefty premium for their exotics, more than a similarly equipped, better-known brand, such as Lamborghini, for example. Is that also "outrageous?"

Eh I think that's a little different. The reason being is because those individuals who would be interested in such expensive cars clearly have enough money to spare and aren't saving as much as they can just to get one. It is more likely for an individual to save for a few months with the hopes of purchasing a $2,000 laptop rather than save for a few years with the hopes of purchasing a $1 million exotic supercar.

Nevertheless, it serves as a useful counter-example to the generalized proposition that price should scale with the degree of name recognition. In that respect it's perfectly apt.

My take on this is that you pay $500 more becouse the chassis supports video cards up to 9800M GTX (that is the only thing that might be exotic about this Sager).

When the price does not scale according to volume of sales four things can be happening.

    * There is no competition (the product is unique).
    * The market perception is pumped up by clever marketing driven by one or two singular products. For instance the d901c! The other products work more like cash cows.
    * Pure Branding. That is a product is marketed as unique and expensive even though, only fit to special people (Clubing).
    * Lobbying (work for instance in markets like the Real State, Oil and much others)

Clevo/Sager playes mostly the second and the third. Were as sometimes comes up with the first (like the Clevo d901c). In the gaming arena being unknown works. It gives a sense of underground, special jewel. Indeed they are cheaper then Alienware or VoodooPC for instance (another underground brands).

Even though you don't want a 9800M GTX you still pay for this possibilty on your pick, mainly due to what I stated above IMHO.

    Trance
PS: By the way, never saw a Subaru engine inside a Zonda so such comparisons are flawed by default. Nevertheless a lot in pricing is perception. Just look at how the price of Oil changed in the past 4 years, even though demand and production still went up as normal.

Even better, in terms of pricing and perception, look at the pricing of perfume - quite a pertty penny can be had for what amounts to a tiny bottle of water, alcohol, and flower squeezin's! :D

The problem of perfume and its pricing is that it only works for sometime. In other words, as soon as some "toillet" brand makes something very similar it becomes, well ... smelly :)

I am actually looking at sager's because of build quality. Namely, the coolinh features. I've yet to see better cooled laptops, which will lead to longer life for all the parts. In a year when your standard warranty is up and all sorts of things are going wrong with the gateway, you'll wish you had the sager....or in two months after sending it in for the third time.

ya the blueray read is about a $165 upgrade on the NP9262, and the Gateway doesnt come with a blue ray drive. Still Sager is more expensive but this is a sager enthusiast forum, this question would probably be better in the dell forum :)

The Gateway is recently on sale. Just this past week at Best Buy. I dont think it will hold that price forever. So if your going to get it, you should hurry it up.

Also, isn't Gateway going bankrupt? It could be a whole Bankruptcy Blowout thing Gateway is doing.

One last thing. Sager's/Clevo's eat Gateways for breakfast.

Gateway have been doing these sales for years now. And still going strong.

icon007, being extremely biased is your strong point eh? That and your wonderful punctuation skills. How is Dell "out of date"? They are all using Cantiga and latest generation GPUs. In fact, it is the Sager np5793 that is out of date, as it is still a santa rosa laptop.

You can't just say "Config one and randomly compare with the other." An Inspiron Mini 9 is around 6 times cheaper than a Sager np9262. At least specify what you want us to do.

plasma, thanks for flaming. as a matter of point i don't give a snap for typing skills. actually i can say Config one and randomly compare with the other. this is what the forum is about. a collective information system for everyone's 2 cents. it is not for you to judge another poster or jive rude remarks in a round about way thru posting. yes i am a sager fan, but i also like the new msi gt725 with ATI Radeon Mobility 4850 coming out as well. tell you what, a little history, i have had gateway products and they were a disappointment, didn't last long with out some problem or other. i think most people on here are great source of information, you included for stuff people don't know about, but come on, don't insult other posters.

What flaming? I was stating some facts. I'm not critisizing your 'typing skills' just that sometimes your sentences didn't make sense. Show me where I was judging you.

Yes, you should have been more specific. You were biased and stated all Dells were overpriced and outdated. You asked to config on the Dell site and compare with A Sager. Ok. I configured a $500 Dell Mini 9 and compared it with a $3000 np9262 rebrand from Puget Systems. Turns out Dell was cheaper.
If you had said "Configure a Dell M1730 and Compare it with xoticpc's Sager np5793", then I would have no reason to complain.

Phew, typing on an iPod Touch is hard.

C'mon guys everyone goes for the best deal for the budget (unless there is no budget)!

If you think Sager is overpriced in the US you should check the prices in EU :)

Haven't noticed the BlueRay drive at the start but that accounts at least for $200 more then the reported gateway. Nevertheless we need to take into account that the Gateway seams to have some better things too.

Considering this, the reported Sager model (check the first post) does not cost $500 more. I would say $300 but nevertheless still costs much more (say 30%).

Never owned a Gateway. Had a Toshiba, DELL, IBM and HP before. My experience is that Sager/Clevo models are not really better in terms of quality. It looks sturdier, but that is all ... looks.

All my laptops worked for 4 years plus (the d901c for 1.5 years and rolling). My Tosh without a glitch (Tablet PC M200), my wife still uses it. The same for the IBM and HP.

The DELL had a RAM problem and the HDD died on me. But hey, I had the same RAM problem with the d901c, had a problem with the LCD connector (got replaced), a key as jumped (puted it back in), and the new has started to show midely the LCD connector problem last November ... but I need it for work.

My experience has been far from great. But still I prize my d901c due to its power for work (that is why I bought it), mainly due to the fact I'm an experience notebook user.

So I can from experience that say either the quality of laptops are getting worst every year or the quality of Clevo notebooks are generally overrated due to thicker plastics. In other words is at most the same as any other.

This without being unfair to any company.

As for quality of service, well the ultimate quality of service is to not need the service in the first place! But when problems happen we want it to be smooth and quick.

Small shops have a more personalized relationship with the customer wether big companies work mainly with call centers following standard procedures.

Personalized does not imply more quality. It implies that the shop might care for the customer problem more. But in the end of the day quality of service as to do with how fast a problem is solved!

My main issue with Sager/Clevo (I live in the EU) is the price of so called high end systems. The perception is that is much cheaper, I've been arguing that it is not that much for ages and sometimes is even more expensive, especialyy in Europe!!

Having worked for Gateway in the past, I'd have to give a word of caution about their quality and service. That $1050 Gateway notebook is a great deal, and if price is a top priority to you, then I'd get it while it's still available at that price. However, if you ever have issues with that notebook, then you'll be in for a rough ride with Gateway.

If i were in the same position as you, and were also looking for a notebook with the same hardware as the Gateway / Sager you are comparing, then I'd probably get the Gateway (if you are looking to buy right now). However, if comparing the non-sale price of $1500 (for either notebook), then I'd get the Sager hands down. The Sager I've owned has been the best notebook I've ever had.

P.S. The people on various forums who have bought the $1050 Gateway notebook seem to be pretty happy so far.

There's no question in my mind that the NP5793 is better in terms of build quality and cooling. That's why I'm interested in it obviously.

But the question is, is build quality alone worth an extra $500? You're not even getting the newest processors like you are in the Gateway so it really just comes down to build quality.

Well, if DarkeC can be believed, then you're also paying for service and support with the Sager that you may not be paying for, and therefore not getting, with the Gateway. That's in addition to the build quality.

If you want the most bang/performance/build quality for the buck with the newest available chipset forget about the 5793 and look at the OCZ Whitebook barebone or reseller configured notebooks in the OCZ forum section here:

No they haven't.... Both Zonda's and Ferrari's are a bit ugly. I mean look at the 612 from the front side and tell me that its pretty. A Ford Mondeo looks better, and please dont get me started on the Zonda's exhaust.

What I meant about the 5793 being light, is that its an attempt by Sager to be a lighter alternative to the 9262. The 612 is the exact same thing. I believe it was the second ever all aluminum car for its day, yet it weights 4000 pounds?

The Sager notebooks are supercars... not Toyotas like you say. The last notable Toyota of merit- not counting Lotus brands- was the Supra yet it was reliable. I'm not saying Sager's aren't reliable but what I am saying is that they are a bit pricey.

Back to main poster. I own a 9262 and have used that gateway at Best Buy. I've never owned one so speaking about the long term who knows. What I do know is that the case is of good quality and the screen is superb. I would be weary in buying a gateway because I hear they use cheaper parts that are sometimes a handful. However my brother still owns a gateway he bought in 2004. It has traveled to Iraq, Thailand and even Japan, and it didn't die until a couple of months ago. Thats what almost four years with heavy military travel? Cmon that is pretty good. This is just my umbiased opinion. Whatever you chose both are great laptops and the Gateway is a steal. I just wouldnt buy it because I am a bit weary.

5793 is not expensive...the 7805u is just selling for dirt right now. Then you add build quality, upgradability, Blu-ray, fingerprint reader(not that important).

Having said that, Sager was my second choice...I was going to get a 7811 but you know...they stop making that.

    ehhh, no

Subaru is fine for the most part but most of their stuff are overglorified econoboxes(maybe that fits gateway...maybe not). I love the Legacy GT though. And Toyota is just one hell of a snooze fest and have almost no performance since the Supra and don't seem to care either. Their reliability is not as great as people make it out to be either.(which definitely does not come to mind in Sager's case)

If you think about it there really is not a reliable performance car line on the market. Yes their are reliable cars such as Honda's and such but I would not call them fun. Sager is fun and reliable. Mazda's are fun but they have issues, Audi's are fun but they have issues. BMW's are fun and trust me...they have problems. Hell look at the GT-R it's a beast but if you use a feature on the transmission you can blow 20k out your lol. I have a G8 GT and it's labeled a Pontiac....so I'm keeping my fingers crossed on it's reliability(it's really an Aus. Holden)

Laptops really can't compare to cars very well, except of course those Ferrari and Lambo laptops lol jk.

Look at a Macbook Pro's cost versus specs, and then tell me Sager is overpriced.

I made that comment in accordance to the fact that Honda has cancelled all development on the S2000, RWD Acuras and the V8 they were going to make.(before this I had interest in Honda because they showed they wanted to get serious)

BTW you can supercharge anything. You obviously need to drive some proper S/C vehicles....not FWD ones.

I like the S2000. But that does not make all their cars fun.

LOL you have the same exact system as me.
