I just received my Sager NP7155 yesterday. Almost immediately after setting the computer up and booting to my desktop, the fan on the right (CPU/GPU?) starts making noise. While I'm waiting to hear back from XoticPC, does this noise sounds normal to you guys?...

I would guess that it's not. The video does not do this justice and it's way more obnoxious in person. The fan on the left appears to be functioning properly and is quiet. That fan on the right starts making a high pitched noise when it kicks in. Thoughts?

That is not normal, is it the fan for sure? It sounds like it could also be coming out of the speaker which may be a ground issue.

I'm 99% positive that it is coming from the fan. Here's another video I just recorded. I discovered the fan control in the Control Center and set it to custom. You can hear how whiney it is, and it also appeared to by throttling up and down sporadically...

What happened to enduring "Extreme QA testing by dedicated technicians"?

Sitting the machine on the bed where the fan can't breathe wont help ;)

I don't disagree with you, but that has nothing to do with it.

It will make the fan spin up and down and change the tone of the fan, set it on a hard surface.

If you insist. Here's a video from last night where I had it set up on a stool with the same noise...

It's hitting something, either the fan cable, thin metal shroud or the bottom cover. Just remove, inspect and screw down properly. Also; grease the bearing (bushing), unless the fan's sticker says 'Vapo' or 'MagLev'; leave it alone then.

Either that or, indeed, send it back. DIY is 5 minutes, RMA is 3+ days.

Good to know. Maybe I'll take a look then. Are all the screws on the bottom of these Clevo's typically the same size, or do I have to worry about which one went where?

The main cover is usually all the same, but do it on a flat surface and lay them out in the same pattern you removed them if you want to be sure.

Well I took it apart this morning and found the culprit of the noise. A piece of foam wrapper was caught on the inside of the fan shown on the left here. I'm not sure how this got past "Extreme QA testing."

You're right; running a stability benchmark ought to be part of QC and this would've caught the issue. In their defence; the fan's pre-assembled and the piece of foam might've dislodged only during transport.

Whatever it was; quick fix, lessons learned and you saved them a lot of hassle. Maybe they'll ship you a tube of IC Diamond by way of thanks and apologies for the inconvenience  ?

I'm glad to see that you were able to find it and got it taken care of. I apologize about that even being an issue. Normally if something isn't acting right or making a noise like that, it would be caught and corrected before shipping. That makes me think it might have possibly happened during shipping as well. But if there is anything I can help with though, feel free to contact me directly.

Happy to see it was an easy fix.
