Wondering which would be the better long term investment (Upgradable, performance, etc..)

Here are the two builds I am debating between....

    Sager NP8170 3D

    i7-2630 2.0ghz, GTX 485m 2GB, 8GB DDR3 Dual Channel 1333mhz Ram

    Sager NP7280

    i7-960 3.2ghz (Desktop CPU), Single GTX 485m 2GB, 6GB DDR3 1066mhz Triple Channel memory

The rest of the features are the same, or comparable, and the price is close enough that it is not a deciding factor.

Your opinions would be greatly appreciated!

well do you want a laptop or a miniaturized desktop with a built in screen and battery backup.

The 7280 is more upgradeable, because it can do Sli or Crossfire and you can put in a faster desktop processor if you want later on down the road if you wanted to do 3d with this you would have to do it on an external screen.

The 8170 is a laptop, so it can be taken around with you more easily than the 7280, but it uses mobile cpus and can only have one gpu, but its still pretty heavy, and it has the 3d screen.

Both are very upgradeable, Both are similar in gaming performance. Of course the NP8170 is 4lbs lighter. If you need portability then the NP8170 might be the choice.
Both should have good resale value down the road if you choose to sell it. :)

If you're getting one GPU with the 7282 why would you ever consider it over an 8170? That screen alone on the 8170 will blow away the screen on the 7282.

Getting one GPU now is the start, I plan on putting more money in it as time goes on.

I'm thinking Long Term, which is why I'm trying to get some opinions.

The 3D and better refresh is definitely a bonus, but isnt a deciding factor. I game on the road, but when I am home, this baby will be hooked up to an HD projector.

I dunno, I would still go for the 8170, or get 2 GPUs now. Getting a GPU by itself, is not smart, IMO. It's like $600 for a GPU; better off buying a whole new machine.

yeah and i think they have some good discounts if you buy the two 485s you get 255 off, also if you go through malibal its about 100 bucks cheaper. and for dual 485ms with the specs you said its 2511, which is a smoking deal if you ask me. basically you get the second 485m for 395 instead of the usual 700 dollars or so
