I own a sager np7330 / clevo w230st and even though it is quite powerful for a 13" laptop i cant seem to enjoy it do to the temperatures it rises to.

I dont game much but here is my experience so far...

    League of Legends:
I could easily max out all the settings and it still runs great. The problem is the temperatures of the cpu rise to the high eighties / low nineties. I could be mistaken but I believe this is not healthy for the cpu. Therefore, although the it can technically run it at maxed out settings, I find myself playing it at medium settings to keep the cpu temps around 70-80.

    CIV 5:
Pretty much the same story as league. I turn down the settings otherwise it will rise to the high nineties.

    COD Ghosts:
This one blew my mind. I started out at the recommended settings and after a minute or two it was around 94-97 for the cpu. I then lowered everything to the minimum (keeping it at 1080p) and the temps were exactly the same. If there was a change it was too marginal to notice. I stopped playing after a few mins because i dont want to hurt the system and see it burst into flames.

As you can see my problem is the cpu (i7-4700MQ), not the gpu. My guess is there are tips and tricks out there to make temperatures more manageable and actually enjoy the system to its full potential. I tried looking for solutions on google but a wasnt able to find anything. I've read the adjusting the voltage can actually help me? I just dont know enough to do it at the moment but I'd be more than happy to read over any articles or tutorials if you can point me in the right direction.

I really look forward to any help. Thanks in advanced!

    Alex

    hi
what software do you use to monitor your temps?
ive tried lots and they all vary even though only by about 5c but when you are hitting the high 80c then that 5c can make a hell of a difference.
theres lots of free software in my sig below. i use core temps,hwinfo64,gpu-z and nvidia inspector.

ghosts is really badly coded and even with the fastest desktop/laptop on the planet it still lags.
my cpu hits the mid 90c on peak/max temp but for 90% of the game it will be mid 70's-low 80's

when was the last time you cleaned the vents and fans out with compressed air. its advisable to do every 3 months or so and even sooner if you have a dog or cat in the house as pet hairs seem to be attracted to the vents.

last thing it might need is repasting with new thermal paste.

    1. I use HWmonitor for temperatures. I figured its simple and lightweight.

    2. Althought gohsts might be badly coded my problem is not getting it to run smoothly but rather to keep the temps under control.

    3. I've only had the pc for a little over a month. The vents are super clean.

    4. Does repasting mean the people at xotic pc did a poor job or just use a bad paste? I really didnt want it to get to this... How much of an improvement should i expect? What past would you recommend?

    Thanks for your help!

I'd go ahead and shoot a message to our service team whether you call our 24hour line or shoot them an email. They should be able to help you get it all sorted out.

if its only a month old then scrap above. shouldnt be dust and shouldnt be a paste job.

as i said download core temps for your cpu and gpu-z for the gpu and see if you get any different readings.

also ambient room temps can certainly bump up all the temps.

I'm worried that this is a recommendation as I now feel this is not normal... But i will contact them.

Downloaded those 2 programs and the temps are pretty much the same. About 1-2 degree discrepancy between the two.

Temperature in the room is around 20-24 so im not in a warm environment.

Repasting takes all of ten minutes. Factory applied paste is never optimal. It takes a little tlc to do it right and can reduce temps by a few c up to over ten c. But if those are cpu temps you're referring to, try Intel xtu. Drop clock speed of the cpu by a few hundred mhz as well as drop voltage -50mv. Will make a world of difference. Also use Nvidia inspector to limit fps and your temps will drop too.

    1. I followed your youtube tutorial to drop the voltage. It's currently sitting at -120 since at -130 wasnt stable. Im not really sure how to drop the clock speed of the cpu though. Is that using xtu as well?

    2. Something I read online was that disabling turbo boost can have a great impact in temperature drops. Does this computer have turbo boost? Should I look into it?

    3. If I were to repaste the cpu, which one should i get?

thank you everyone for your imput so far!

Yes, your laptop has turbo boost. When the CPU uses its Turbo Boost feature, it will put out more heat (higher frequency = more heat). It's up to you to disable that, though; since you're talking about lowering clocks and voltage, disabling TB as well is taking a lot away from the capability of the CPU.

For thermal compound, IC Diamond and Gelid GC Extreme seem to be among the best and are non capacitive, making them safer as well.

Thanks for the brand names. I;ll look into it.

Any idea how I can lower the cpu clock speed? I've been searching but I see a lot of different approaches that dont really fit this model.

    Thanks
