I received my np8130 about 2 week ago (from xoticpc), and I've been using it often since, but I do seem to have problems with it.

The noise of the fans can be distracting, even in idle mode. If I am playing games for an hour or two, it can get really noisy. If I have the laptop on my lap while playing it can get very hot and uncomfortable.

I am concerned because all reviews I've read and seen about the Np8130 describe it as a silent and cool machine. Any help would be appreciated.

First thing I can think of- are you playing with the machine sitting directly in your lap? If so, you're probably covering the intake vents on the bottom of the machine which is causing it to heat up and spin up the fans. Try running it on a hard level surface and seeing if you notice the same heat/fan issues. Normally the fans run quiet on idle with the newest bios, but if you're blocking the vents, heat goes up and the fans have to run harder (and if the vents are covered, they aren't moving much air anyway, which compounds the problem)

    Thanks for the fast response.

While it is sitting on my lap I probably am covering the intake vents, that could be part of the problem. However, even on a flat surface like the desk it is on now, the fans can be noisy, you mentioned the bios, how would I be able to check and see if I would need to upgrade it?

Lol it can be if you actually went out and measured the decibels of noise the laptop produces.

@soldierfelix If you have a HD6970M like me get used 2 it because it makes a lot of noise

edit: @mr mysterious yes the word noisy is still subjective because not everyone has the same idea of what is noisy. Even when you have the numbers what is considered noisy and what is considered loud?

I understand that. I was responding to the second part of your sentence.

"also the word noisy is not objective".

my 8130 is the coolest laptop I've ever owned, including when running FSX for hours at a time. it's also not all that noisy either, IMO. we use cooler pads under every other laptop, but there is absolutely no need for me to put the Sager on a pad because it's always cool to the touch. I'm very impressed with their cooling expertise. The fan noise isn't exceptionally quiet, but the cooling, IMO, IS exceptional. Perhaps your games stress the system far more than FSX running in max res with sliders up?

It's so...so loud. But it is my first laptop, so maybe that's it. It doesn't really get that hot, just the noise. Going to order a U3 cooler to see if it helps.

That's strange. I have Np8150 with 6970M and the gpu never exceeded 82C (179F) once. Cooling is amazing. The bottom, keyboard, or any part of laptop frame temperature is same as room temperature. I didn't realize how "hot" it is running till I put my hands over the exhaust vent. This laptop is amazing. It's very quiet, even during the gaming. I BARELY notice the noise when I press Fn and 1 button at same time that will manually set the fan to 100 percent.

My laptop is like silent to my ears.

The cooling on this thing is better than any other laptop I have owned. I seriously think you guys are blocking the vents or not giving it enough clearance. The one design flaw is that there aren't folding legs in the back so you can't raise the laptop a little (like most keyboards) but I've never seen a laptop with that feature. That's just my idea.

If I am gaming for hours, I use a $5 notebook stand that lifts up the back of the system and for a gaming laptop, I'd say it's silent comparatively.

If you want noisy, press Fn and 1 at the same time. That's turbo mode. That's the real maximum speed of the fans.

EDIT: got the Fn+1 hotkey working after a reinstall

Also, I should mention that the part of the laptop that gets quite hot is the hard-drive area.
