So I was playing BF4, temps were all within acceptable boundaries.
i7-2630QM was hitting about 85-90C hot I know but not insane by any stretch.
GTX 560M was hitting about 74-78C.
All of a sudden boom. Laptop shut off without warning.
This has happened multiple times over the course of the year. About 3 or so,
My question is what causes these random shutdowns and can they be prevented.

Most sudden shut downs are the result of thermal protection. The GPU temps look fine but CPU is high as you mentioned.
First step would be to open up the bottom and clean out the vents and fans. If you've never done this since having you NP8130 its over due for a good cleaning. If that doesnt help then you'll want to reapply thermal compound to the CPU and GPU. -

Normally if its RAM or HDD you'd get a BSOD. You can still run HDTune and Memtest to see if they show any results.

Could be a power issue - a faulty PSU, or possibly ESD damage from when you opened it up to repaste that is very intermittent.

ESD damage will not usually come out during stress loading and then be fine after a reboot even temporarily. If it's an instant shutdown then I would imagine PSU too, if it has a light on the PSU check to see if it goes out.
-
The PSU light does go out. However it happens so rarely I am not sure if it's a problem with the AC waveform and the PSU seems to hold up during Furmark and Prime95 as I ran them for about an hour and a half to quick cure my thermal paste. It was also on a power strip too. Could over current protection be having a hiccup?

If the light goes out the psu itself or the strip it is plugged into is tripping out.

The strip continues functioning however the laptop turns off. I imagine it is the power strip causing the shutdown because the PSU doesn't get nearly as hot when plugged directly into mains power. Maybe the PSU is overheating due to the bad waveforms and shutting down after extended use. However that doesn't explain why it happens so rarely and without warning and only during gaming or otherwise heavy loading. So most likely it is the PSU. However this supply has handled video rendering and furmark without breaking a sweat. So I am at a loss.

Also remember the CPU is 47W and the GPU is 75W, stressing the GPU does a lot more to the system.
