So, my 6990M seems to produce 30-40 fps on newer games so I thought to overclock it to give it a little boost. The problem is, the AMD driver only allows OC from 715 to 740mhz. If I use Sapphire TRIXX to overclock, the screen would flicker and tear no matter what I set the clock to. Even at 740 mhz on Saphhire TRIXX I'd get constant flicker and tearing in game and during normal use. The problem will not go away until I reset to stock clock and reboot the laptop. The AMD Overdrive at 740mhz has no problem. I'd really like to push beyond 740 but it seems I can't at the moment. What could be causing it?

Aside from extra voltage there is little else you can do. I know I was able to tweak more out of the GPU core than the memory but you need to balance one with the other i.e. find a sweet spot and play side by side. I would start with default memory speed and find the highest GPU clock you can go without tearing by benchmarking 3dMark 11. Once you found GPU o/c potential then go slowly up with the RAM and find it's sweet spot. Most o/c potential will be experienced with the GPU rather than the ram on these cards.

PS- I found huge performance gains with AMD 12.11 beta 11 drivers..without these drivers I would be a dead man... :)

    Best of luck :)

MSI Afterburner does the same for me. What I do is overclock the card, then put the notebook in sleep mode then turn it back on and the flicker is gone.

I installed the beta 11 drivers yesterday and Far Cry 3 is playable at 35-50 fps now. I'll try the MSI afterburner, but the problem is the instant flicker with Sapphire TRIXX at any clock speed (even 720 mhz). Is there a way to change the voltage with software?

I believe there is a vBIOS editor program that will give you some flexibility regarding this.
