I've spent the better part of today searching for a replacement charger for my new (to me) NP8150. The OEM charger cable was chewed to shreds by the previous owner's cat. It still works fine, but won't last much longer as I am traveling about 2-3 weeks every month.![]()
Everybody is looking for something smaller, understandably so, as this charger could also double as a building block to the pyramids. However I am looking for as close to an OEM replacement as possible.
My NP8150 specs are i7 2720 and GTX485m, so at a minimum I need an equivalent 180W charger. Some threads claim Asus chargers are compatible, and I found one Asus aftermarket charger in the GTA rated at 19v 9.5A. I also found another option, the Targus 180w charger, also rated at 19v 9.5A. Would either of these work?
I am also very handy with a soldering iron. I could purchase a new cable or a smaller, cheaper charger and swap the cables. So my question is which tip would I need in the donor charger?
Thanks for any replies.

You'll want one with between 19-19.5v output with 9.5 amps or greater and a 5.5mm x 2.5mm barrel (no centre pin connector). Anything that meets those conditions is fine. Good makes include FSP and delta electronics.

Thank you for the reply Meaker. So far I called a couple of places, and it turns out the Asus adapter does fit as it has the same plug. However that place only carries the 150W charger, not the 180W. The Targus 180W is not in stock.
I also called Reflex Notebook, and they were more than willing to order an OEM charger from Sager from me. However, since this is Canada, the cost is $145 plus tax and S&H. The whole NP8150 cost me $500, so I'm not going to spend that kind of money on a charger.
I took apart the OEM adapter, and replacing the cable is a bit more involved than I was hoping. The cable connects to the PCB behind two heat shields which also need to be desoldered in at least 2 places in order to be removed. It's easy work, but for now I need to source a proper replacement cable. All the alternatives I found in the $15-20 range from chargers I could cannibalize were all very short and much thinner than OEM.
At least I confirmed that Asus chargers are a drop in replacement, so it should make it a bit easier to find now.
