I purchased this laptop late 2011 and it's worked great up until now. Unfortunately, these past few days I've been experiencing some problems with it. First, it started beeping randomly. Sometimes only twice and other times 7 or 8 or a lot more. When this first happened I just restarted the computer and everything seemed to work fine. However, it started up again and this time after beeping for some amount of time the computer shut down. I'm assuming it was because the bottom left back corner of the laptop was extremely hot, so it seems there was some kind of overheating issue. Now, the other part of the problem was after this, my primary hard drive was no longer being recognized (and therefore I could not boot the computer into windows even). Since then the primary hard drive has been recognized again, but the problem of it not being recognized occurs sporadically. Also, when it does boot, it quickly overheats and shuts down again.

Open it up and clean it out. Check the temps after that and if still heating up bad it is time for a repaste. It is easy to open up, blow out all the dust from the inside out. And then make a routine to clean it out once a month. Dust buildup will stop the airflow and cause the overheating.

Also, once you clean it, if it seems ok, if you don't already do it, make a backup and then schedule backups regularly. That way if the drive fails from the heat, you do not lose all your data. Good luck, and please keep us informed of how it goes.

I second what Abidderman says about cleaning it. 99% of the time that will fix it especially if you've never done so. Your NP8150 is probably at least a year old so you'll be surprised at how much dust is in there.

Just got done cleaning it out. There was a ton of dust build up. Unfortunately still experiencing the problems. Not sure about the heat issue as I haven't had my laptop running long enough to tell, but it won't detect my main hard drive (hasn't for the last few hours now) even after removing it and putting it back in and trying to reset the BIOS settings (this sometimes worked the past few times). Also when I start it now there is 1 long beep and 1 short beep pretty much everytime. I let it run longer once and it had 3 long beeps and then 1 short beep. Not really sure what all this means. The number of beeps seems to be somewhat sporadic.

Ok so I ran it again. Still no luck on my hard drive reappearing (the secondary drive still reads fine) and the overheating issue is still present. Whatever is right below the left fan is what seems to be getting really hot. And it doesn't take long either. My computer was only on for a couple minutes in the BIOS and it started to get very hot down there. It also beeped twice and then a minute or so after it beeped 5 times. It seems to start with 2 beeps almost every time but after that seems to be somewhat random.

The left fan doesn't seem to be running, though the right ones working fine... this might be the issue

well THERE is ur problem :D

if ure talking about the "left fan" while looking at the keyboard (laptop standing up, ready for use), then thats the side where ur cpu is located. take off the backplate and check if the fan is connected properly. maybe while cleaning out the dust uve accidentally pulled out the fan connector.

aside from that, go ahead and see if ur hard drive can be detected on a different computer, for example using an external usb hdd casing.

    aggree with all above.
you could well have had such a build up of dust its burnt the fan out but as mentioned check all the wires first.

have you ever monitored your temperatures? most important on high end laptops as long term high temps can cause lasting damage.
download HW monitor and especially Core Temps from my signature below (as it sounds like that is where the heat is) and leave the shortcuts on your desktop and just run them in the background.
if you can manage to boot and use it could you post what temps you are getting for all cores and graphics card so we can advise further.

Once you switch out the fan make sure you clean your notebook regularly.

Before switching out the fan do your backups, i can't stress this enough. You never know what can go wrong even with a simple fan swap.

Good news! I got the fan working. I guess it came disconnected somehow. Anyhow I reconnected it and its working properly. However the hard drive still is not getting recognized in the BIOS but it is on another computer. Is there anything I can do that might fix this or am I just gonna have to send it in?

check that hard drive for errors on that other computer first. popular tools include checkdisk, crystaldiskinfo and others. if the hdd is fine then it could very well be ur internal sata connector. u could test that by installing a different hdd and do some test runs with it, see if its being recognized properly and all.

Great to hear, no need to set up the service ticket now. Unless there was damage done to the SATA port.

I just put the SSD back in and it's being recognized again :D hopefully it will continue to be now... don't know what was wrong, but I'm just happy my computer is working again.

EDIT: Hutsady, I already made the service ticket. Is there any way you could cancel it for me?

I think I solved the SSD problem. I had the 010g firmware for the Crucial m4 and I read that this was a common bug. Updated my firmware so my computer should be back in working order again :D
