Hey everyone, hope your x-mas went well,

I currently am debating whether to build a system or go with the NP 8651, and I'm leaning towards the sager due to the portability factor.

I am an avid street fighter fan and player, and anything above 1 frame of input lag (9~14 ms is ideal) interferes with 1-frame combos in the game, so I'm wondering if anyone here has any data on whether there is input delay present, if it even is possible, on the np8651.

I was also wondering if the 'addons' were worth it on xoticpc, such as 'thermal compound' and 'copper cooling.'

Any input from owners on what they like/dislike would be appreciated as well, thanks.

I still have to try some fighting game on my recently acquired P650sg, but I'm actually used to an old 24" that friends of mine do not like exactly for the same reason.

I'll try once I'll get to my asus screen, but between the ips panel and the optimus thing, I have some concerns about the input lag.

I read somewhere on this forum that IPS display gives up input lag in favor of colors and viewing angles.

I truly do wonder if an external 'lagless' display would bypass any pre-existing laptop lag, if that were the case I wouldn't mind buying a 100$ monitor.

Not heard anything of input lag here with the IPS display.. not seen anyone complain of it on the P650SE/SG with IPS/3K IPS/ 4K IPS...

The fact is that input lag is present. On IPS panels is higher than on TN panels, with exceptions obviously, but it could be noticeable or not. And on laptop with Optimus, the video signal is passed through the Intel IGP for every video output, and not directly outputted by the GPU. This could add to input lag, but it's something unmeasurable, and unevitable, and it could still be unnoticeable. This is a reason I was torn between this laptop and the P75x, once it was confirmed that's not going to use Optimus.

Input lag is such an issue only with fighting games, and the fighting game community is basically on consoles, so no wonder it's unheard of outside fighting game community forums.

Best would be a comparison between a console lag-free setup and a laptop, hardwiring an input on the two setups, recording and measuring the difference between the videos.

Regarding optimus the additional input lag is processed simultaneously with the input lag of the ips display so you won't notice that.

regarding my IPS LG screen i never saw any stutter/lag/ghosting.

Excuse me, but how is this possible?

I believe the input lag of the monitor is the time between when the monitor receive a signal and when that signal is actually reflected in the pixels. If a specific frame is sent to the monitor, the iGPU should process that frame before sending it, and not when it's already drifting around the panel's electronic.

So the dGPU should generate a frame, send it through the iGPU which actually process it/route it or whatever it does. The iGPU then send it to the video output where it is processed by the monitor's electronic and then displayed. Am I missing something somewhere?

I think every passage adds time, it's a matter of how much time it is added in the end.

If the end result is higher than 16/17ms, then there's a one frame lag between when a button is pressed and when a character on the screen throws a punch or something, and that's important in certain fighting games that have input window as tight as one frame, for example Street Fighter 4.

Even on games such as arena-fps, that usually have a fast gameplay, one frame of input lag isn't anything worth worrying about. Or two or three frames, for that matter, except maybe if you're playing competitively..

I think pretty much everyone will agree to get IC Diamond thermal compound on there, its one of the best there is and for gaming it will get you lower temps.
The copper cooling upgrade goes back and forth in opinion. There are a few threads that talk about it.
