    Hi all,

I haven't posted in a really long time, mostly because my NP8660 has been excellent since I bought it four years ago. On my way to China three months ago, I opened my laptop and heard a snapping sound coming from the left hinge that connects the monitor to the computer. As soon as I heard the noise I checked the hinge and it appears that a plastic piece of some kind broke off and the joint popped out a little bit, I can't really tell. Right now the right joint is still nice and snug and appears to be bearing all the weight of the monitor on it, so I'm not sure how long that will last. I can see some of the wires that run through the joint are now exposed on the left side.

My question is: If I wanted to fix this problem, would I have to completely replace the monitor on my laptop? If so, how would I go about doing that and how much do you think it would cost? Second, will it completely snap off at some point, or can the right joint support all the weight of the monitor for some time before giving out? I've had this problem for about three months now and I will be heading back to the States next week.

Please take a look at the attached pictures for a better description of the problem. Thanks for any advice you guys can provide!

No, you wouldn't need to replace the LCD panel/screen, if that's what you meant. :)

Contact Sager (or your reseller) and see if you can get a replacement part. It looks like only the plastic on the bezel where the hinge is has snapped, so they may need to ship you a new bezel (frame for the LCD screen).

Doesn't look like too serious of a break, I'd be more worried about the wires being rubbed internally instead of the hinge itself as long as it still works correctly and doesn't prevent you from closing the lid. A new LCD bezel assembly should do the trick and not too hard to do if I recall correctly.

now we know who your supplier was :D

must admit this is the first hinge problem ive seen with that model.
the original alienware crap m15x had hundred if not thousands of broken hinges worldwide and it was a major problem.

Yeah, haven't really run across one before I must say. In fact we rarely have Sager hinge issues at all.

I was surprised as well, considering it's built like a tank. Oh well...during college it traveled quite a bit and has been to a few continents and so far held up great. The hinge broke actually in the airport after I had been flying for six hours. I always put it in a backpack with a sweatshirt as padding and under the seat in front of me, I don't trust overhead bins and everyone trying to shove their stuff in them. Not completely sure if it was metal fatigue or it got bumped during the flight.

Looks like we have nothing to worry about then if the Aliens attempt to overtake us with their technology. :p

@dynamite: Could have been either one! Transit almost always puts some stress on electronics. Since Derek has your back, I think it'll be just fine, though. :D
